FINAL TEST

Again, I sat nervously in the waiting room of the Apparition Testing Centre. After failing once already, I was desperate to pass this time. I was starting my internship in St Mungo’s in a week and they had told me that I had to be able to apparate. At this stage in my life, apparition was a must. I couldn’t get a job without it!

“Miss Lily?”

I whipped around and gaped at the examiner. It was the same one! Why, oh why did the fates hate me so much? This would be more embarrassing than the first time. I was sure of it! I turned red immediately, blushing to the roots of my hair, enough to make any tomato feel ashamed.

I nodded numbly as he smiled that stupid reassuring smile again. It was a sign! A sign that I would fail! I nearly cried…if the Portkey took me to Edinburgh again, I would literally burst into tears.

He quietly handed me another Chocolate Frog wrapper and we were transported to our destination. This time, I landed more gracefully and I thanked my lucky stars that I hadn’t made a fool of myself already. The examiner was really nice to me and I didn’t want to disappoint him again. I could tell that he hated having to fail people.

I opened my eyes slowly and when I saw that we were not in a city, I relaxed and opened them fully. Maybe there was a chance for me after all!

He was waiting in front of expectantly, with a knowing smile on his face, as if he could feel my tension and could understand it. He handed me another conjured bag and gave me my instructions.

They were the same as last time, except that I had to apparate to Honeydukes instead of the Three Broomsticks.

It didn’t seem impossible. The weather was beautiful, with the sun beating down on my back and with no wind or rain to speak of. There was no rain so that made me feel a bit better. All of these factors seemed to suggest that my test would go right. I only hoped so.

When he told me to apparate when I was ready, I knew that I had to rectify the mistakes I had made previously. He saw me looking around the empty field we were in and gave me a quizzical look.

“There aren’t any Muggles around, are there? No farms, farmers, anything? No sheep, cows, talking horses that could tell the Muggles? Just you and me?”

He threw back his head and laughed. I was really worried about this test, and the prat was laughing! I scowled and waited for his answer impatiently, throwing him my best dirty look.

“No,” he finally choked out, “No. There is nobody nearby and you don’t have to worry about checking. This is an isolated field in the middle of nowhere and that is as much as I can tell you. Well done for checking though. You can apparate to Honeydukes when you are ready, just remember to take the bag with you.”

He wiped away tears with one hand and scribbled something onto his clipboard.

It wasn’t that funny! I just wanted to pass my test! So I slung the bad over my shoulder and clutched it tightly. I closed my eyes and concentrated on Destination, Determination and Deliberation. I saw the store in my mind’s eye and concentrated on the sign above the shop.

No! If you do that, you will apparate there, and falling from that height will be painful! So I listened to my head and then concentrated on the door of Honeydukes, just as anyone would walk in or out. I knew that on a Sunday, Honeydukes was closed, so I knew it was a safe place to apparate to.

I focused myself on moving all of my particles to Honeydukes and made sure that, in my mind’s eye, there were no more bits of me remaining in the field.

I knew that I had to do it in one go, so I blew out a breath and quickly thought, “NOW!”

I head a crack like a whip and started choking for breath as I felt myself being taken through the discomfort of Apparition. My body was being stretched and compacted in ways I never knew existed!

All at once, I landed and opened my eyes, frantically drawing breaths, and checking myself to see if I was all in place.

I couldn’t feel anything missing and the bag was still there, so I thought that everything was fine.

The other examiner came towards me from where he had been waiting inside the door of Hogsmeade and smiled at me. I held my breath in anticipation.

“Well, Miss Lily, you came here safely, unseen by Muggles, with the bag, in the right destination and without splinching yourself. Well done! Pass! With flying colours!”

I was elated! I had finally passed! I grabbed the licence out of his hand and squealed with joy, doing a victory dance in the process, something which involved a lot of waving of arms, kicking, jumping, screaming and clicking of heels. What else could I do? I was happy!

~My Final Apparition Test~

As I entered the Apparition Center for the second time, I was amazed at how the tension continued to pollute the air.

The receptionist at the front desk, Melanie, was the same one I had seen before. Her presence brought back horrible memories of my first time failing my apparition test.

The waiting area was empty this time, unlike it had been last time. I nervously walked towards the receptionist.

“How may I help you?” The receptionist asked shortly.

I did a double take. She had been kind and relaxed last time I was here. But now, she was rude and made me feel more nervous.

“Erm, I’m here for my apparition test.”

The lady rolled her eyes. “And you would be Miss Pillow, I presume?” She said annoyingly, glancing down at a paper. “Ah, yes, I remember you.” She smiled sourly. “You’re the one who failed a few days ago. Come back to try again?”

I glared at her. She had no right to say that to me. “Yes, I believe I will do much better this time.” I said confidently. Her rudeness and arrogant behavior was strengthening my attitude.

“Don’t get your hopes up sweetie. I’ve had four others come out today, failing. The MoM official testing you today isn’t the nicest man.” She smirked.

“Well I really am wasting my time sitting here listening to you. So would you mind telling me where to go?” I snapped.

She rolled her eyes at me. “Through that door.” She muttered, flicking her wand at a door behind her.

“Later.” I muttered as I entered the hallway.

I walked down the hall, and came to the third door on my left. I swung open the door and marched in.

“Name.” A man snapped, as he thrust a basket into my arms.

“Oh, erm… Pillow.” I stuttered, catching the empty basket.

“Right then, I don’t have all day to wait for you to fail so I can get on with my life. So you have to apparite from a field to Hogsmeade.” The man had short grey hair and pale blue eyes. He stared coldly at me as he informed me of how much he didn’t want to be here to wait for me to fail.

I nodded, annoyed. First the receptionist, now him! But I knew something was wrong. They were just doing this to startle me. Or make me nervous. To test my true abilities during the test.

“Take this porkey to the West field, and then begin your test. Good luck.” The man pointed towards a candle stick lying on the ground.

I stepped forward and touched the candlestick gently.

********

I landed in the middle of a huge field. The weather was sunny, and I felt the heat beating down on my back.

I was surrounded by corn and soybeans that had been planted only a few days before.

I closed my eyes and tried to calm my heart. It was beating rapidly.

I glanced down at the basket that I held.

Destination. Determination. Deliberation! Destination. Determination! Deliberation!

I concentrated on the Hogs Head in Hogsmeade, where I had decided to apparate to.

Hogs Head.

Old, musty sign depicting a hog with a barrel of rum or some magical drink.

I began to apparate.

For exactly one second, my neck and throat seemed to pull apart. I struggled to breathe. I felt like it was all over. Like I was going to be ripped to pieces.

But then, it was all over.

I was standing in front of the Hog’s Head.

All of the pulling sensations were gone. And I held the basket, too!

I had done it! I had remember how to concentrate, how to apparate!

“Miss Pillow! MISS PILLOW!”

I was in my own little world, already hosting a huge party in my mind, when I snapped out of it and saw a MoM official walking towards me.

My heart sunk.

I had failed.

How could I have possibly passed?

What was I thinking???

I never apparated!

I had just…. appeared here!

Sadly, I turned to face the man.

“Congratulations Miss Pillow! You have achieved your goal of passing your apparition test!”

I screamed. And Screamed. And Screamed.

I HAD DONE IT!!!!!!!

I HAD APPARATED!!!!

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

The happiness inside of me wasn’t staying inside.

“Thank you so much, Mr…..” I trailed off, still bouncing up at down.

“Mr. Kurt.” He said, smiling.

“Oh, Mr. Kurt! Thank you so much!”

“You are very welcome, Miss Pillow.”

I was beaming. My confidence was sky- rocketing.

I felt like I could do anything!

As I sit in the waiting room of the apparition testing centre, I go through everything I have learnt over the past few weeks. Although I am nervous, I know I must stay focused. This was my final chance, if I didn’t pass this time I would never live it down. I was already the last one to pass in my family, and no one else had failed first time, so this was it!

“Determination…Destination…Deliberation…”

The three words ran through my mind over and over again until my thoughts were interrupted.

“Severus Snape?”

I looked up and smiled, glad that it wasn’t the same person as I had before; I didn’t think I could ever live that last test down.
I slowly stood up and took a deep calming breath before following the tester outside. I was glad that the weather was calm, though I put my sunglasses on straight away. I didn’t want the glare of the sun interrupting my thoughts when trying to apparate. I wanted to keep all my limbs together this time!
The tester turned to me and handed me a small brown boot in which I swiftly took hold of. We were quickly transported to our starting point.

“I will meet you at your destination point” The tester said smiling, “Outside the left window of the Hogshead public house”

She smiled and quickly apparated. I took another deep breath and took in my surroundings. There were no muggles in sight, in fact the field was completely empty. Closing my eyes, I focused upon the Hogshead, taking in every detail of the left window.

“Destination”

I opened my eyes and took one last deep breath. I was going to do this, limbs and all

“Determination”

I knew what could go wrong; though this time I was ready. I knew what I had to do

“Deliberation”

I closed my eyes once more and put everything together. Suddenly I felt a tingling sensation, yet this time I didn’t panic. I knew the sensation would last but seconds. After no time at all, I felt the ground beneath my feet. I barely registered the hot sun or the voice shouting my name. I didn’t want to open my eyes in case I had failed, yet at least I wasn’t wet this time, meaning I had missed the river thankfully.

“Snape…Severus Snape”

I tried to make out her tone…she seemed…it was like I had…

“You can open your eyes now, Snape”

Her voice was…cheerful. I opened my eyes and focused upon the testers face and grinned back. I quickly checked my limbs, counted every leg, arm and finger. Everything was there. I turned around and could see the weird stares from the wizards inside the Hogshead public house.

“Have I…” I uttered quietly as I turned back to the tester, barely able to contain my excitement, “Have I…passed?”

The tester smiled and waved her wand over the parchment. A huge purple ‘Passed’ appeared over the top of my certificate. I had made it. I had passed my apparition test.

“Well done” She said smiling as she handed me my certificate and licence.

I couldn’t stop grinning. I was so glad my destination had been the Hogshead as I grasped hold of my papers and flew into the door to celebrate…

PostSubject: Re: TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test   TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test EmptyMon May 15 2006, 14:38

After the last disastrous apparition test (which I failed, if you must know), I have to admit I’m a little hesitant about retaking it. I don’t think I could take it if I failed again, not only would the embarrassment be too much to bear, my friends would give me a right ribbing.

Like before, I entered the testing centre with a fair amount of trepidation, but at least this time I wasn’t suffering from a bad cold. It was the same, wizened old man sitting at the desk, and almost as soon as I’d shown him my papers, Annabel Crane appeared in the doorway, and told me in clipped tones to “follow her, and quickly.”

I did as I was told, and we entered her office within moments. She began barking out the details of the test in a cold, offhand manner, and I couldn’t help but wish that the young man who’d met me last time was here instead.

“This time you’re apparating from Gallow’s Field in Cornwall, and your destination will, once again, be Hogsmeade. Let’s hope you’re a little better prepared than before,” she smirked cruelly, “how’s your finger?”

“Just fine, thanks.” I mumbled, scowling at her back when she had turned to her desk. She picked up a scruffy old teddy bear, and held it out for me to touch. Once I had, I felt that familiar feeling of being pulled through air, and moments later I landed with a bump on a grassy surface.

I looked up from my sprawling position on the ground to see Annabel standing smugly above me, holding her dratted clipboard.

“Ready to begin?” She asked, and I could hear her voice absolutely dripping with arrogance.

I stood up and squared my shoulders.

“Yes,” I said firmly, “let’s start.”

“Very well,” she said, and began asking me the same questions as before. This time, I whizzed through them, giving correct answers and not hesitating at all. I could see Annabel’s expression becoming sourer and sourer as I answered each question right, until it looked like she was sucking on a lemon.

“Well done,” she said in a forced voice, “you must have revised very thoroughly.”

“Yes,” I replied, inwardly grinning, but not giving her the satisfaction of thinking her praise meant anything to me.

“Now, it’s time for you to apparate to Hogsmeade. Be aware that the distance is quite a bit further this time, why, we’re nearly at Land’s End!” She chuckled in a ridiculously high-pitched manner. “I’ll go stand over there by that fence. You find a place that is safe and convenient to apparate from, and John will be there to meet you again. You’re aiming for just outside the Three Broomsticks.”

I nodded, and scanned the field, noticing for the first time how creepy it was there. There was a rope hanging from the bare branches of a tree in one corner, and remembering the name of the place, “Gallow’s Field”, I shuddered.

But back to the matter in hand. There were no Muggles about, but to be on the safe side I went and stood underneath the large tree, trying to ignore the knotted rope, hoping that it was simply a child’s swing.

Closing my eyes, I remembered the three D’s I’d learned in my theory preparation: destination, deliberation and determination. I pictured Hogsmeade clearly in my mind, and I was SO determined to get there.

And then I closed my eyes, and just apparated. I felt a rushing in my ears and a sensation as though I was being squeezed through a very small tunnel. Moments later, I appeared outside the Three Broomsticks, to see John smiling at me.

“Well done!” he said, “All present and correct?”

I looked down at myself and was pleased to see I’d not left any part of me behind that time.

“Oh my God!” I said, “Have I passed?”

“Well, we’ll need to wait for official confirmation from Annabel, but I think it’s pretty safe to say you have.” He replied, winking at me.

A few seconds later, Annabel arrived, and smiled at me.

“Congratulations,” she said, “you have passed your apparition test.”

She then handed me a certificate to show this, and I beamed at her and John.

“Thanks!” I said, “Does this mean I can apparate home now?”

“Go ahead,” John replied, “and once again, well done!”

And with that I popped off home.

PostSubject: Re: TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test   TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test EmptyWed Jul 19 2006, 16:35

That day I woke up feeling a bit nauseous. I didn't want to leave the house. I really didn't want to go do my Apparition test.

Breakfast seemed dry. The bed seemed like calling me...

Don't go to the test, skully. You don't have to. You can stay with me. Come... Come.....

But i knew I had to go.

I got dressed (simple jeans and a t-shirt) and off i went.

On the way to the Apparition Test Centre I kept thinking it was going to be alright, I was going to do fine. But i kept being nervous and scared.

I got to the Apparition testing Centre frightened. I really was. I mean, I had failed the other time.

Oh my God what if I fail again? I thought. I'll be mocked and teased for the rest of my life. I'll be a total loser. Gaaaah!

I had to wait because there were a lot of people in front of me. I sat on the closest chair I found to the exit. I grabbed some magazines there were about Apparition.

One of them had an interview to the only person able to fail 54 apparition exams. Really. 54 in a road.

Oh my God! And I though I was bad for failing just ONE.

I looked at the man on the cover. He was old, about 60 years old and was smiling (although i though if i was in his situation, I'd be crying) and saying that he was just going to do one more test and then, if he failed, he'd stop trying. "It isn't worth it", he was saying.

Good for you. I thought. Too bad you only figured that out now.

"Miss Skuldandy?" I suddenly heard.

I raised my head from the magazine. A very old woman was calling me. She was a bit scary and that didn't really helped my nervs. She was wearing a long black dress, like the "witches" from muggle children's books.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Grab this." She threw me a very old blue can at me. The moment I touched it, i felt dizzy and everything started spinning around me. Suddenly I was in a large field with nothing around me except a man.

I though it had been very rude of that woman to just throw me the can, but then it hit me. That man was my examiner. And it was the same one from before.

"Oh. It's you." He said.

"Oh. It's YOU." I said. I don't even know why i said that, i guess it was the nervs. It'm not usually rude like that.

He raised an eyebrow.

"Well, let's see if you can pass this time" He said, with a grin.

"hmmm" I answered. What was I supposed to say? Let's see if i don't find you in he women's bathroom again?

"You'll have to apparate in Hogsmeade, in front of the Three Brooms." He said.

He searched in his huge bag and gave me a box. The same box than before! I got excited. I really liked that box.

"You'll take this box again."

I nodded.

"You can leave..." He looked at his watch "...now!"

And he disappeared.

I looked around. The field was very large and i could see if there was any house around. Then i remembered they might had been counting the time I took apparating. So, I closed my eyes and grabbed the box harder.

Come on. The three D's. Determination, Desesper, Desaster... No, no, no, that wasn't it. Dizzyness, Diddling, Dumping. No, no, no, what am I saying? Ok, ok, ok, FOCUS, Skully, you can do this. Determination, Destination, Deliberation.

Suddenly i felt very nauseous and dizzy and held the box harder.

I really wanted to pass this test, so I focused, focused, focused....

I felt like I was puched in the stomache. Then, I kept hearing some kind of buzzing. LIke a fly was near me. But I was too scared to open my eyes.

Then, suddenly, the dizzyness stopped. I was afraid to open my eyes, so I shook my head and searched around with my hands. I could still be at the field. Then, my hand hit something.

"OWW!" I said in pain. I opened my eyes.

I had hit the Three Brooms' window. I stared at it. My examiner was talking to Madame Rosmerta. What a jerk! He was supposed to be waiting for me.

I looked at myself. I wanted to see if I was still all together. All in one pice. I was. The box? It was still there.

I.... I had made it!

The examiner saw me from the window and came to me.

But it was certain all he wanted was to go back to Madame Rosmerta.

"Good! You passed." He said, impatient.

"I.... I.... I passed?" I asked. I couldn't believe it. "really?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Here's your certificate." He kept looking at inside of the Three Brooms.

"oh, ok." I said. "And how about the box.....?" I asked, but he was already gone.

"keep it!" he yelled from the inside of the Three Brooms.

"hmm." I looked at the box. It was very pretty. "YES!!!" I yelled.

Everyone stared at me. I smiled and hurried to get out of there.

I HAD PASSED! I had made it! I wasn't a loser.

But that I already knew.

I walked slowly and calmly into the testing center, noting the calm good weather, though also realizing that the sun could work against me. My mind was more open to everything around me as I did not want a repeat performance – I had to pass my final apparition test – for my own sanity and for the housepoints that I would earn my house – the good old Ravenclaws!

Walking into the room, I handed my details over to the receptionist lady and took a seat near the door. I rolled my shoulders around and tried to relax before pulling my small red notebook from my pocket. I started flicking through my notes as I waited – going through everything in my mind. I was not about to be caught out this time.

Determination – well I was determined!
Destination. Rememeber to focus and ask any questions if you are not sure.
Deliberation .

The three D’s raced in my mind as I heard my name being called.

“Miss Kitkat, are you ready for your test?”

I took a deep breath and stood up, smiling at the young woman tester as she led me outside. We walked for a couple of minutes before we stoped – in the middle of a field. My heart raced! This was a lot easier than before!

The woman turned to me and smiled.

“I would like you to apparate into Hogsmead, right next to the old tree in the centre of the town. I will be waiting for you there”

I smiled and nodded and watched as the tester apparated in front of me. Taking a deep breath, I looked around me to make sure there were no muggles. It was safe! Except….There was a young girl walking her dog. I waved casually to her and slowly walked in the posite direction and around the other side of a small hedge. Stopping, I once again looked around me. Now it was safe! There were no muggles around at all! Taking another breath I focused on the old tree. I focused on the ground beneath the tree, and let nothing else enter my mind. Closing my eyes, I could feel the small tingle inside my skin….

“Miss kitkat?”

I opened my eyes and saw the tester in front of me! Looking around I saw I was standing beneath the old tree – my exact destination point. I barely registered the smiling faces of my friends standing over the other side of the road, their hands clapping together for me!

“Have I…?” I barely hoped to ask before the tester smiled and nodded.

“Well done Miss kitkat” she said smiling, “you have passed!”

She handed me a small golden coloured certificate stamped with the words “PASSED”. I jumped for joy! I had done it! I had finally passed my apparition test – all that work paid off – I could legally apparate! And I wasn’t going to waste any time! Closing my eyes, I focused on my destination….the three broomsticks!! I had to celebrate!

I walked out into the field where the ministry wokers’ had told me to meet them. There was nothing to see for miles around and I knew that this would be the perfect place to test at. There wasn’t any muggles nearby to disturbed me while I was testing. I also noticed that the weather was sunny and there wasn’t any wind which made me confident that i could pass. Today was going to go better then the first time I had tried it because at least there wasn’t any wind that would make the process more difficult.

"I see that you made it" a ministry worker said. He had red hair and was wearing a muggle’s outfit which was blue overalls. "Are you ready to take the test" he asked in an annoyed voice

"Yes" I said noticing that he wanted to hurry up and get this over with. He could have been nicer but he could have already did a few other kids and was becoming bored with it.

"Take this paper with you, you need to appear at Hogsmead. Try to get near the Three Broomsticks. A ministry worker should be there" he added shoving the paper into her hand and steeping away, giving me room to apparate.

I took the paper and closed my eyes taking a deep breath. I knew i could do it this time. The weather was perfect and there wasn’t any wind to interfere with the apperation. With a flick of my cloak I started to apparate and noticed that familiar feeling of being pushed through a small tube and I knew there was no turning back. I focused all my might on Hogmead, the place near the Three Broomsticks and once I felt my feet touch the ground I opened my eyes and looked around. I then looked down and to my delight I saw that I was still in one piece.

"You passed" said another ministry worker who had blonde hair running towards me. "May I see those papers so that I can fill them out. You did a wonderful job, you can relax now" he said trying to calming me down.

"Yes" I shouted when I heard the news and did a little dance.

"Ok, now before you go," he started to say" Here's your certificate, you’ll need this" and handed a piece of paper to me and I saw that it was the certificate for passing my apperation test. I took the paper and pocketed it. I would have to show mom and dad this, they would be so proud, I thought to myself.

“Is this all that I need” I said wanting to hurry up and get home so that I could tell my parents.

“Yes, I should be. You can go now, you did a great job” he said

“Thanks, ill be going now.” I said and I turned around heading towards the train. After a few hours on the train I made it home and told my parents about what had happened. Afterwards they threw me party and I invited all of my friends.

TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test

Walking
towards the area that the unhelpful lady at the desk had marked on my map I saw
that there were many people sat there waiting to take there test. Taking one of
the spare seats I bent down and pulled out a large book titled ‘A beginners
guide to apparition’ and began to flick through the pages. After 10 minutes of
doing this I put the book down and let an exasperated sigh escape my lips. What
was I doing here? It was obvious that I was going to fail. As my what ifs
filled my head, I heard my name being called.

Shaking my
head I unsteadily got onto my feet and bade my way towards the door.

“Right, Polly
I have brought you in here to give you a run down on what is going on. First of
I would like you to make your way to the field a mile from here by 2pm. Once
you get there you will be given your destination by an instructor, if you
arrive at your destination fully and passed then you will return here by
apparition to receive your license. If however you fail you will be allowed to
re-take the test again on the 5th of February. Any questions?” The
man had a thick moustache that had been moving when he spoke. Suppressing
laughter I smiled at him and nodded before crocking out a weak.

“Yes sir.” Before
leaving the room. My heart pounding in my chest I got my broom and began to
make my way home. O how it would be so much easier if I could apperate.

When 2pm came
and I was stood on the field with the rest of the hopefuls my heart pounded and
my blood cursed throughout my body. My fear left a nasty taste hanging inside
my mouth.

After my name
had been called I walked over to a tall women with a perm. Her hair was brown
but it appeared that it had been ginger before and then dyed.

“Right Polly, Lydia
and Mike is it?” she asked us all.

As well all
nodded back at her she did not smile like most people would in a situation but
continued to scribble things down on her clip board. Although I was tempted to
peek over at them and read what was wrote I resisted the urge by focusing my
mind on all that I had been learning through the past few months.

“Well your
destination is Hogsmede you will all be leaving here in 1 minute so self
pre-pair yourselves I will leave here 5 minutes after you and you are to wait
in the exact place you landed to here my verdict. Understand?” As I said yes
the thought that ran through my head was she is so bossy.

Lydia and Mike both had there eyes closed
and the boy , Mike, was muttering things to himself. Closing my eyes so that I did
not feel the odd one out I ran through the three d’s through my head. Destination,
determination and deliberation. O god was that right. Bending down to look in
my bag I was interrupted by a small cough from the instructor.

“Your time is
up please stand on one of the stars.” Moving to the only empty star a pink one
with a yellow outline. Those had not been there before she must have placed
them down.

“One…two…three…apperate.”
After a split second delay I concentrated my whole body on this trying to block
out the stray thoughts of doubt. Breathing in through my nose and out through
my mouth I let my whole head be filled with the image of Hogsmede.

With that my
chest began to feel tighter and the familiar sense of being shoved through a
very tight space waved over me. It was a good thing that I was not claustrophobic
otherwise I might have found it impossible to apperate.

As that
thought waved through my mind I felt my feet come in contact with the ground.
Opening my eyes which had been cleansed tightly I saw the familiar surroundings
of Hogsmede. The girl named Lydia
was no where to be seen but the boy waved and smiled at me. He was stood just
three passes ahead.

“Yes I got
here.” I cheered quietly to myself. Patting my body to see if I had left
anything behind I stood there waiting for the instructor to tell me if I had
passed or failed.

PostSubject: Re: TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test   TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test EmptyFri Sep 19 2008, 16:15

Since I had failed my first Apparition test rather horribly, I wasn’t really looking forward to repeating the experience. I had worked extra hard for this one, which would hopefully be my last Apparition test. It wasn’t that I didn’t like going to the Testing Centre; just hat the thought of failing miserably again wasn’t on the top of my To-Do List. When I arrived at the Centre, I was dressed like before: totally Muggle in a teal V-neck sweater under a light jacket and a dark wash pair of jeans. Fortunately I wasn’t assigned to the same tester and potentially embarrassed twice, and instead got a guy by the name of Maitland. This got a smile out of me, but luckily I was able to focus throughout the test, as he was no where near as awesome as the character.

After I did some paperwork, Mr. Maitland handed me a keychain depicting Big Ben, and we were whisked away to an empty field. It being autumn, the field was turning the most beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow, but I didn’t have time to appreciate beauty. I was fidgety, continuously shifting my weight from one foot to the other and fingering my necklace. Mr. Maitland smiled encouragingly and reminded me to simply remember my three D’s, and that he’d see me at the Three Broomsticks. I had to hold back a snort – was that the only thing they were trained to say? My last tester had done the same, and I had failed to pass. He, clothed inconspicuously as well in a blue plaid shirt and a pair of jeans, simply gave a wave of his wand and was gone. I, like during my last test, watched his feet until they disappeared. There hadn’t even been the usual crack signaling Apparition! I knew it would be a while until I was that good; it was nice that we weren’t in a crowded area, lest the noise attract attention.

The last test I had taken, I had splinched off a leg – but I was confident that wouldn’t happen this time. I patted the left-behind leg for reassurance, and brought out my wand, breathing in the nature, so much different than the near-smog I was used to. Repeating the three D’s in my head, Determination, Deliberation, Destination, I waited until I had slowed my racing heartbeat until raising my wand. I gave a flick similar to Mr. Maitland’s, and then experienced the most nauseating, uncomfortable, and wonderful feeling of my life.

You see, Apparition isn’t that pleasant of an experience, but the feeling you get afterwards, when you arrive in one place in the correct place…

Well, that’s worth it every time.

I was beside myself with joy when my tester saw me, and I barely heard Mr. Maitland’s congratulatory, “Well done, Miss Richardson!” over the ecstatic repetition of I did it! in my head. Though not quite there – at all – as I signed my Apparition Certificate after Mr. Maitland had, or when I rolled it up and Apparated – legally – home to drop it off and then back to Hogsmeade to celebrate…it was a good day.

I sat down in the waiting room, trying not to think about the last time I was in here and how horribly I messed up that apparition test. I took deep breaths and went over everything I needed to know in order to pass my test. The three D’s: determination, destination, deliberation. I repeated them several times. Make sure there are no Muggles around, turn on the stop with determination and deliberation concentrating on the destination.

I had taken extra classes over the last few weeks, and felt much more confident that I’ll pass.

“Katie?”

I stood up at the sound of my name and walked over to where a pleasant looking witch was standing—much preferable to the last examiner who tested me, a grouchy wizard that wanted the test over as soon as possible.

“Hi,” I said nervously.

“Hi Katie. If you’ll just take hold of this Portkey, we’ll arrive at our starting location and get this over with as soon as possible.”

I smiled at her and took the Portkey, the familiar jerk at the naval over with, I saw that we were standing in the middle of a wheat field with the sun shining down happily on our heads. Some of my tension eased. The weather was perfect for apparition, as was the location. There were no distractions in sight—it was just me, the land and the examiner. I went over the three D’s again in my head.

“Okay, Katie. You’re going to need to apparate from here to The Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. As long as you land close to the destination without splinching or breaking any other rules of apparition, you’ll pass the examination. Whenever you’re ready you may go right ahead.”

I took a deep breath and concentrated hard on The Three Broomsticks. I took my time, carefully picturing in my mind exactly where I wanted to go. Knowing I was reading, I made a quick turn on the spot, moving with deliberation and focusing with all my might on the restaurant. The familiar sensation of being exposed to a great deal of pressure overcame me, and when it passed, I opened my eyes carefully.

I breathed a sigh of relief; not only were all of my fingers still with me, I was standing right in front of the Three Broomsticks. A smile came over my face as I realized I’d probably just passed my test.

With a barely perceptible pop, the examiner appeared next to me.

“Congratulations,” she said with a smile. “You’ve apparated to the correct location with no splinching and completely unseen by Muggles. We’ll just Apparate back to the Center now where I’ll hand in your inspection sheet and you can be added to the list of registered witches who can apparate.”

I was so happy I could hug her! I resisted the urge to dance right there on the spot and instead apparated with her back to the Ministry.

Upon returning to the Apparition Center, she handed me my paper and I stared down happily at the box which was now marked “Pass”. I walked up to the font desk where my name was added to the Apparition List. I then apparated happily back home, glad I had finally passed my test.

PostSubject: Re: TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test   TEST 5: Apparition Practical 2: Final test EmptySat Jul 23 2011, 19:32

My step is a bit lighter this time as I walk up to the Apparition check in station. For one thing, Teri Lockingswood was nowhere in sight and my great-grandfather Aberforth had managed to soothe things over with Teri's parents. Seriously, it's not like she lost her arm forever, it was less than ten minutes. What a pathetic whiner! I was the one who had ended up failing my apparition test, after all. And did she have to apologize in front of the entire school, or write a ten page essay on Apparition safety? Nope, that witch was me.

My confidence today is ten times higher. Other than accidentally taking Teri's arm with me on my last exam, I'd apparated without incident. I knew that I could do this. But, gee, there are a lot of witches and wizards here. They can't be all taking their test, can they? But then I catch site of Clover Villechamp, one of Teri's friends. She's busy whispering in the ear of someone I don't recognize. And then she points at me.

Gulp.

It appears I have an audience watching me.

No worries, though. I've got this. I won't worry about Clover or the others watching me. Apparition is easy and completely safe if one merely concentrates. Maybe someday I'll be able to apparate like a pro, but at the moment my only plan is not to take a splinched arm with me to Hogsmeade. Although if Clover doesn't stop pointing her finger in my direction...

"Hrm, hrm" I glance up, and I'm next. I release the death grip I've been keeping on my apparition form and hand it to the wizard standing in front of me. Well, I assume he's a wizard, but he's dressed more like the muggle Prime Minister, and it's only the glimpse of his wand in his breast pocket that convinces me reassures me.

"Rigby Dumbledore?" His left eyebrow raises a bit, and yup, that's a smirk on his lips. He's obviously been told of my previous attempt at my license. My cheeks catch fire, but I manage to affirm that yes, I am Rigby Dumbledore. You'd think my last name would impress more, but no, I'm now just that girl who splinched Terri Lockingswood's arm off.

"Over there, with Madame Fromage." He pointed to the center of the clearing, where a boy was just reappearing. I walked over, close enough to see that the bottom of his right shoe was suspiciously absent. Lucky for him, Madam Fromage didn't seem to notice.

"Well done, Billingsby!" She clapped her hands and smiled at him. I watched as he limped over to get his certificate of completion. Fromage was still beaming when I stepped up to introduce myself. Her smiled faded a bit, but she smelled strongly of cheese, so I think that makes us even. I splinch other people, she smells like a mousetrap. We can't all be perfect.

I know she recognizes my name because suddenly she is all business.

"I see that this is your second attempt an an Apparition License." It sounds like a question, not a statement so I answer.

"Yes, Madame Fromage. I'm determined to succeed and will not be making the same errors that I did last time." This was no time to point out that I had actually suceeded in apparating, that if dumb Teri hadn't wanted to stick around and intimadate me, and if the Apparation Ministy had just used simple magic to keeps the floors day and non-slippery, then I would have waltzed out of the exam room with my license. Logic hadn't worked then, and it certainly wasn't going to work now. I felt a bit like a prisoner going up for parole.

My answer did seem to mollify her a bit, and her tone was lighter when she asked me to name the three D's of Apparating.

"Destination, Determination and Deliberation!" I practically shouted out the answers, but I was going for enthusiasm. I sensed that was the way to Madame Fromage's heart. And indeed, it appeared to be working because she smiled just a little at me.

"Good, good. Now as for your destination, it will be in Hogsmeade, in front of the Shrieking Shack. You may begin starting now."

Okay, I'm ready for this, I told myself. But my stomach is in knots, and I can't help but take a few steps back from Madame Fromage. No sense in tempting fate by being too close to her when I apparate. I concentrate on holding my wand tightly and picturing the Shrieking Shack. I picture it the way it looked that spring three years ago when I saw it for the first time. The day was warm and sunny, much like today. The Shack looks even more shabby in the daylight, and loses some of it's fearful facade in the sunshine. I picture the rickety gate, and then I picture a spot on the ground just in front of that gate, because I don't want to apparate on top of it like Gloria Zanders did last year.

Destination, got it.

Now I take a deep breath in, focusing on determination. I think only of the Shrieking Shack, I hear only the sound of my breathing. I can do this. I am determined to do this.

Finally, it's time for deliberation. The key to successful apparation is mostly in this last step. You must mean to apparate, it can't be just a half hearted thought. In my minds eye I see the Shrieking Shack. I raise my foot on the ground and step into my spin with much deliberation. When I open up my eyes I will see myself whole and safe in Hogsmeade. The air spins around me and I am on my way.

I know immediately that I have arrived because it's probably about ten degrees cooler in the shade of the Shrieking Shack. I'm awfully close to the gate, but as I'm not impaled upon it I think it's good. The breath I didn't realize I was still holding whooshes out of me in a tea kettle shriek.

"Well done, Dumbledore!" Glancing to my left I see Mr. Stern, the wizard who'd failed me last time, standing there with a clipboard in his hands. He checked something off, his quill scratching my fate down.

"Did I, um, did I do okay?"

"Yes, indeed you did!" he writes a little more, than glances up sharply at me, "You haven't brought any extra body parts with you this time, have you?"

"No!" I can't help being shocked by his question, but I can see that from his shaking shoulders he's trying not to laugh.

"Well, that's all as it should be. Now back to Madame Fromage, she'll have your certificate ready."

I smile weakly back at him. All I have to do is apparate back to the clearing. It's a little easier to apparate this second time, although my legs feel a bit shaky when I pop back in front of Fromage. But at least I'm all in one piece, shoes included. Madame Fromage doesn't clap for me, but her smile is on full beam as she hands me my certificate.

"Congratulations! You can now take this certificate to the third floor of the Ministry of Magic to get your official license. This certificate is only temporary and will expire in a month."

"Thank you, Madame Fromage, thank you!" Maybe I'll send her some perfume, to cover up the smell of cheese.

As I make my way out of the clearing I spot Clover and her friend, they aren't smirking anymore. I resist the urge to gloat, because I am now a responsible, apparating witch. I am that much closer to becoming an Auror someday.
