GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german Empty
PostSubject: GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german   GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german EmptyWed Apr 05 2006, 13:59

well, as you all might have noticed i am the resident german on this site (Hello everyone!!) and therefore i think i will for now start the classes alright?

okay, the word in the headline, servus (ser-voos) is not actually german, it's Bavarian, which is a german bundesland, the german euiqvalent of a state. it's where i am from and there you say servus. the funny thing is, in latin "servus" means slave...

i would like to start with some basic pronunciation training, because there are some sounds in the german language that are not used in english.

a very important one is the german way to say e. so, normally english speakers, who see the e at the end of a word, either leave it silent or say ay, which is not the way you do say it. the e in the end of words, and in most other cases is pronounced like the e in "men". if you say "men" and then say the word just without the "n" in the back you will have the right sound.

the most known ones are ä ö and ü. they are called "umlaute" and for those of you who do not have them as keys on your keyboard, the official way of writing them in that case is ae, oe and ue. so. we need to traing our lips and tongues to move them the right way to make the sound come out the right way. (i need you to do this in real life, because otherwise you will nto get what i mean.

the Ü: first, say "oo". okay, then say "ee". you will notice that when you say ee the sides of your tongue touch the top of yourgums, even the teeth. what you need to do to say the ü is say oo with your mouth, but ee with your tongue. it takes some practice, but it is cool to do, i taught my friends in america and they do it all the tie now. ^^

the Ä: is the easiest, it is pronunced like the a in fast, if you are american. if you are british, the equvalent would be that. ^^

the Ö: it's maybe the hardest, because you say a german o with your mouth, and a german e with your tongue. the english o is like an o and then a u in the end. in german we only say o, as in from. you could also compare the ö to the way the o is pronunced in the word "word".

when you have all done that we can start learning to speak german next lesson! thank you and good night!

GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german Empty
PostSubject: Re: GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german   GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german EmptyMon Apr 10 2006, 12:22

hehe, thanks mick!

okay, now that we basically know how to pronunce things i think it is time to add some words to it, right? let's start with something easy: smalltalk

you need to remember, in germany there are three different "you"s. there is the singular you, the plural you, and the you you use forpeople you are not aquaint with, like your boss, you teachers, and for the younger ones: grown-ups.

the normal every day you for friends etc is "du" (doo)
the plural "you" for du is "ihr" (eer)

the formal singular "you" is "sie" (see)
the plural form of that is also sie ^^

so if you meet someone you would say:

"Hallo" or, if you don't know the person you could say "Grüß Gott" (the ß is the equivalent to two "s" and the german government is unfortunately trying to get rid of this letter), "Guten Tag/Morgen/Abend" (good day/morning/evening) (gooten tahg/morgen/ahbend)

the person you talk to will respond the same way. for younger people the words "Servus" (sérvoos) and in the southern part also "Habadere" (háh-bah-dére) or simply "dere" is quite the trendy word to say.

next step: how are you doing? - i am fine/good/okay/bad

informal: "wie geht's?" (wee gehts)
formal: "Wie geht es ihnen?" (wee geht es eenen. the es is pronunced like the letter "S" when you say the alphabet ^^)

answer: "Mir geht es sehr gut/gut/okay/schlecht" (meer geht S sehr goot/goot/okay/shlecht. the ch sounds like a cat hissing btw ^^ and the e is the normal german e.)

you always need to remember to pronunce the "e"'s that might occur in the end of words. and you don't say "ee" as you would in english, but the way i explained it to you in my first post.

well, the first ice is broken (do we only have that saying in germany? dunno...), now you can go out there and try it out. speaking in different languages, no matter how stupid the things are you say is also always helpful to pick up girls. :face:

oh, and for the ones that have crossed that line:

"Ich liebe dich" (eech leebe deech) --- I love you
"Willst du mich heiraten" (weelst doo meech hy-rah-ten) -- do you want to marry me?

have fun! :lol!:

GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german Empty
PostSubject: Re: GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german   GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german EmptyThu May 11 2006, 08:06

Part One:The problem with Der, Die, Das:

as you all might have noticed for the english word "the" there is many many little forms in german, depending on the gender of the word and the way it is used. i will give you a few examples.

The Horse is neutral and therefore Das Pferd in it's basic form.

The Dog is masculine, so it's Der Hund

The Cat is feminine and therefore Die Katze.

when i was in fourth grade i learned a good way to remember when to bring in which form of "the" when it came to the use of the noun. here it is. you basically think about you standing behind a door and the thing/person animal standing outside in the hallway. there are four questions you can ask that lead you to the four different forms of "der die das" that are needed to make a sentence make sense. the questions are:

1.) wer/was steht vor her Tür? (who/what is standing in front of the door?)
answer: der Hund, die Katze, das Pferd.

2.) Wessen Stimme höre ich? (whose voice am i hearing?)
answer: die Stimme des Hundes, die Stimme der Katze, die Stimme des Pferdes

3.) Wem öffne ich die Tür? (whom am i opening the door to? rofl)
answer: dem Hund, der Katze, dem Pferd

4.) Wen/was sehe ich? (who/what am i seeing?)
answer: den Hund, die Katze, das Pferd

because, as it is quite difficult, many germans have trouble with this themselves. ^^

Part Two: vocabulary: animals!

der Hund - the dog
die Katze - the cat
das Pferd -the horse
das Meerschweinchen - the guinea pig
die Schlange - the snake
der Dachs - the badger
der Löwe - the lion
der Adler - the eagle
die Krähe - the crow
der Hamster - the hamster
die Schnecke - the snail
der Frosch - the frog
die Eule - the owl
Die Maus - the mouse
Der Elefant - the elephant
das Nilpferd - the HIPPO!
die Ratte - the rat
die Mücke - the mosquito
die Fliege - the fly
Die Hummel - the bumblebee
der Drache - the dragon (watch out: der Drachen means the KITE)

okay? have fun with this! :D

PostSubject: Re: GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german   GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german EmptySat Jun 10 2006, 10:13

Okay, so I thought I’d add my 2 cents…

Pronouns

Nominative Case (Subject: I, you, he, she)

Some of these LisaMacKay already did, but I like seeing them as a list to compare them.

I = ich <== not capitalized
you (informal singular) = du
he = er
she = sie
it* = es
we = wir
you (informal plural; y’all) = ihr
you (formal) = Sie <== capitalized!
they = sie

* Be careful with es. It is only used for nouns that have the neuter gender. In English we use this for everything, but in German it would only be used for nouns that use das.

Accusative Case (Direct Object: me, her, him)

She hit {/color][color=red]him.

me = mich
you (informal singular) = dich
he = ihn
she = sie
it* = es
we = uns
you (informal plural; y’all) = euch
you (formal) = Sie <== capitalized!
they = sie

Verbs: Present Indicative

Basically, that is the tense/mood you are most used to. z.B. He walks. She hits him. He runs.

The verb is always in the 2nd position in a normal sentence (questions are different). z.B.
She hits him.
Sie trifft ihn.
…lol, lovely example…

Most verbs will conjugate like this:

küssen – to kiss GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german 549390

Ich küsse ihn. I kiss him.
Du küsst ihn. You kiss him.*
Er küsst dich. He kisses you.
Wir küssen sie. We kiss them.
Ihr küsst ihn. You all kiss him.
Sie küsse uns. They kiss us.

* In this example, one s is dropped in the du form because otherwise there would be three s’s in a row. An “st” is usually added for the du form. You can also see this written as Du küßt ihn.

Well, I guess that’s enough grammar for now. Here’s some verbs to use.

haben – to have *
küssen – to kiss **
tanzen – to dance **
treffen – to hit **
hören - to listen
sehen – to see/watch
essen – to eat *
schlafen – to sleep **

* These verbs are irregulars. Try looking them up on AltaVista Babelfish or click the “I” and “Konjugation/Deklination” next to results on dict.leo.org.

** These verbs are like küssen. They have small differences in their spelling, but are pretty much regular.

You can now say stuff like this, if you use vocab from LisaMacKay's lesson:

Ich küsse den Hund.
Ich sehe die Katze ::purr:: .
UND...
Das Nilpferd tanzt.

Tschuess!

I was trying to learn this and keep this in my brain forever, because I really want to learn another language, but my goodness! Never read this stuff when your tired... And when I attempted the U with the two dots above it, it was weird... I'm not sure if I did it right. My Dad's probably wondering why I'm making weird noises XD But I had fun doing it all the same. I'll read this again tommorow and then maybe more will sink in.

haha, wonderful lesson, ama! (can i call you that?) i think it might be easier for an american to explain the german language to other americans.

She hits him.
Sie trifft ihn.
…lol, lovely example…

this is not quite right, because "to hit" is more like "schlagen" (as in punch), the word "treffen" is translated as "to meet"

and i really like the explanation with "y'all"

the whole "der die das" business is horribly confusing, and you can't really ever get the grasp on which word goes with which form of "the" unless you grew up with the language... sometimes not even i know the right form :lol:

Well, looking at these lessons sure is fun, but some thing - oh my god. I had quite an urge to laugh when I read this word: "Habadere". I mean, I am a native German speaker and I've never ever heard of that word ^^ I guess it's probably just as Bavarian as "Grüß Gott!" Because if you'd show up where I live in Germany and say that stuff, well, let's just say people would probably look at you strangely, especially the younger ones...but besides that, everything seems to be very well done here GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german Devil

EDIT: "Servus" definitely belongs onto the list of words you don't say everywhere as well. I'm trying not to laugh out loud imagining someone coming up to me, greeting me like that ^^

hahaha thanks for the lessons. These will kinda help me, as I thought I was heading into German II with no clue of what was going on. I really didnt learn a thing all year. We spent the whole time on verb conjugations. They are really hard!!! =[[[

Frau is gonna be soooo proud of me! Espically since we are getting penpals in Germany this year, and it would be kinda bad if I said somthing wrong.... lol.

Really good lessons, by the way.

Okay, so nobody has updated for a while, so do you guys mind if I do????? Thanks!!!.

Colors:
grun green
rosa pink
orange orange
rot red
schwarz black
weiss white
purpur purple

schmerzen ache

Body Parts:
Bauch belly
Kopf head
Herz heart
Arm arm
Zehe toe
Hand hand
Zahn tooth
Bein leg

And I am going to add ONE more animal, my FAVORITE!!

Flusspferd Hippo!!!!

So, now, if we wanted to say "I have a Head Ache" it would be "Ich habe Kopfschmerzen" Kopf, meaning head, and schmerzen meaning ache. Bein schmerzen would be leg ache, herzschmerzen is heartache, ect.

Now, we are gonna have some fun.

Lets combinde the Animals, the body parts, and the colors.

Try this one:
meine purpur flusspferd hat eine Herzschmerzen.

think it through, and when you think you got it, look here:
Spoiler:

get it??? good!!! That is all I am going to put today.

Hey...I think it's still really cool that you're trying to learn German, but may I say one thing?

Quote :
meine purpur flusspferd hat eine Herzschmerzen

Unfortunately, it's not as easy as that GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german Devil Cause actually it would be along the lines of this:

Mein purpurnes Flusspferd hat Herzschmerzen.

Yeah, well, we do take endings and capital letters seriously ^^
And, by the way, 'purpur' isn't used too often as far as I know of, we rather tend to say 'lila'

But whatever, have fun learning GERMAN: servus!- lessons in german 436937
