A small challenge for the Basking in Books forum. How many books can you read in six months?

I thought this would be fun not only to get everyone reading, but also to see just how many books you do actually read in a period of time.

The person who has read the most books between 21st February and 20th August will win a small amount of housepoints (to be decided at a later date).

Be honest - there's no point cheating, because then it wouldn't be a proper record of what you've read.

Simply post in this thread stating your intention to participate, then from the 21st February just edit your post every time you finish a book, noting down the title and author.

Have fun!

(Note: This is kind of an experiment. Hopefully it'll work!)

I'm totally in! *cracks knuckles* Just to be fair, I have to warn you all, I was on the Reading Team in high school. And yes, it is just as nerdy as it sounds. We all had to read our share of assigned books and then compete against other schools by answering questions on the books- we were undefeated... You know, that actually might be something fun to do here.... hmmmm.....

Books Read from February 21st on:

February

Drop Dead Beautiful by Jackie Collins (yeah, I know, it's trashy!) 500 pgs
Down the Rabbit Hole: An Echo Falls Mystery by Peter Abrahams- it's a young adult novel but it was awesome! I got it at the library because Stephen King endorsed it and I'm a sucker for a King endorsement. I SUPER HIGHLY reccommend it, the main character, Ingrid is awesome!
13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson- cute book, it was like tagging along on a little European adventure (if only!)

March

Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsey. A serial killer that only kills the bad guys, my kind of book. XD
The Spiderwick Chronicles: Book 1 The Field Guide by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black. Much too short, cute but not really well written.

The Spiderwich Chronicles: Book 2 The Seeing Stone by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black- better than the first and I read it for free cuz I spent the day at the Borders just hanging out. I love reading books for free!
Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsey- I really love these books, this one was much different from the series, whilst the first book was was pretty much followed, but I don't really see the two as the same anymore (kind of like how I view Gossip Girl)

Monsters of Men by M.L. Cherry- My friend Matt wrote this while he was in Iraq. Fortunately for us he saw no fighting action and wrote an amazing zombie book during his 7 month stay. It's really good, although it still needs to be edited (he's shopping around for an agent at the moment). Matt and I share a love for zombie flicks, and we use to discuss them while at work and how well our store was built to withstand a zombie attack, so it's pretty awesome to see his amazing ideas all on paper. Matt is one of the most brilliant people I know, and I hope he gets published!
Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow- it's an incrediable novel about werewolves told all in prose! Although it is a bit violent in parts, the book was such a smooth read. These aren't your Stephenie Myer werewolves. XD If violence doesn't turn you off too much then run, don't walk, and check out this book!
Duma Key by Stephen King- awesome, awesome King book! It's soooo good, and I got into it right away, didn't even cheat on it with another book as I am apt to do. I usually start reading several books at once, and wait to see which one gets urgent, but this book had my full attention.

April

Triage by Richard Laymon, et al- this was book with 3 seperate stories all based on the same plot- a man calls a woman at work, tells her he's coming to get her and then comes in and shoots up her workplace. It started as a competition between Laymon and another writer(actually they tried to write a story together but then both had different directions, so they decided to make a challenge out of it), but then Laymon died shortly after he finished the short story and another writer, Ketcher, got in on the story. It was okay, but it's pretty violent, so I really don't recommend it to the younger or more squeamish HEers... Laymon had a very sick imagination.

Fly By Night by Frances Hardinge- this is a book, I think it's supposed to be aimed at Young Adults, about an alternate world- a bit like England in the 17th century. Books are all but banned, and everything is run by guilds, and a strange, literate young girl named Mosca gets caught up in the politics of a burgeoning war. It's really strange and I loved it from the beginning.
Secrets in the Attic by V.C. Andrews- but not the real V.C. Andrews since she's been dead for years and years. Her estate found an author (or three) to continue her legacy. But it's not very good. I read this while waiting at Borders for a friend, as is my habit to read free books. Especially if they aren't very good, as this one proved to be. I am a strange and twisted person, I loved Flowers in the Attic, loved the sequel Petals On the Wind even more. I rooted for the brother and sister to end up together. But that's because V.C. Andrews had a way of writing almost gothic dark, twisty fairytales, whilst her clones just regurgitate plotlines that my neighbor's 16yr daughter could probably write after an afternoon of watching soap operas. I don't know why I bothered. It was horrible. I just kept waiting for the punch- Like in the in Heaven when she finds out that her fiance Troy Tatterton is really her uncle cause his brother(who was her mother Leigh's stepfather) raped her mom when she was just 15, forcing her to runaway to the hills of West Virginia, where she met the man Heaven thought was her father, a poor mountain man that turned to drink and abuse once his beautiful bride died in childbirth... See, it's sick, but it's drama. (Heaven later has Troy's baby- but only because she thought he was dead and was so shocked to find him living in the cottage in the English Maze that she kind of pushed aside the whole neice/uncle business). In the Flowers in the Attic series Cathy does end up with her brother Chris, but her two kids come from other fathers, and Chris has himself fixed so that they won't have any freak babies... I cannot honestly believe I am admitting to reading these books...shame on you for reading this too! XD
Bury Me Deep by Christopher Pike- love him, love him, love him. He was the author that made reading fun for me, his novels have never spoken down to his teen audience, he is fantastic. Right now I carry one or two of his novels with me to read if I get stuck somewhere. I've read them all before, but it's nice to slip back into them. Although this is an okay book, I guess there was a reason that I haven't re-read it sooner. It's not his best work.
Master of Murder by Christopher Pike- one of his bests! One of my favorite books, period. The main character, Marvin, is a senior in high school, and also a best selling author of a teen Murder Mystery series that is gripping the nation. He writes under a fake name, and he's totally stuck on the last book, but then he gets a note that lets him know that someone knows who he really is. And he starts to realize that his plots are an awful lot like a supposed suicide a year ago of his crush's boyfriend. Pike was at his height in the late 80's up to mid 90's. He is brilliant. He's also written several adult novels (Falling is the best book!!!!!!!!). I LOVE HIM.

May

The Devil Who Tamed Her by Johanna Lindsey- I rarely read romance novels, prefering chick lit instead. But I've been reading Lindsey since I was a freshman in high school, and I justify reading historical romances since you can learn stuff. This one is cute, with a very likeable hero, but I thought the heroine's predictament was a bit contrived because her character had appeared in a previous novel and it was just all a bit too easy how she went from evil wench to misunderstood beauty... but I will say it kept me interested. Not a book that I'm overly proud to admit I read though...
The Host by Stephenie Meyer- so good!! Read it now. I mean it. I'll wait.
Love the One You're With by Emily Griffin- Griffen wrote a two books, Something Borrowed and Something Blue that I've re-read multiple times. I loved them. But then she came out with Baby Proof- which totally turned me off since the main character doesn't want children so much that she divorces her lovely husband when he changes his mind and wants one. I understand kids aren't for everyone, but I just couldn't relate. Love the One You're With was miles better, and surprisingly made me understand the Bella/Jacob thing better. Ellen is happily married to Andy, her best friend's brother. They have been married exactly one hundred days when she runs into her ex Leo, whom she had an intense relationship. He makes it clear that he is still interested (even though he's the one that pushed her away) His return confuses her, because while she is happy, she married into a very wealthy close knit southern family (she's a motherless poor kid from Pittsburgh) and her husband Andy is so everything that Leo is not. So she embarks on a selfish journey (but at the same time she pretty much keeps her likeability factor) while she tries to find out who and where she belongs. It's almost Twilight in reverse minus the supernatural.

Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsey- The third book from Lindsey, not as good as the first two. It introduced a supernatural twist that I was crazy about. Hopefully the Showtime series won't make that mistake. I did like Dexter's interaction with Cody as the Serial Killer Step Daddy/Big Brother. Cody seems more impulsive then Dexter was with Harry, but it pays off as the little one does save his life. Hopefully if there's a fourth book it will put the focus back on Dexter getting away with murder...
Odd Hours by Dean Kootnz- If you haven't read Odd Thomas yet, then do so immediatly! He is one of my favorite literary characters of all time. This is the fourth book featuring my beloved Odd, in which he not only saves the usual lives, soothes not just the usual ghosts, but literally saves the world. He's a busy young man. Also you can check out Odd Thomas Webisodes (it's a short little live action story that takes place between Brother Odd and Odd Hours. Plus, later this month my boy gets his very own graphic novel!!!!
Fairest by Gail Carson Levine- I loved the novel Ella the Enchanted (seriously ten times better than the movie). Fairest takes place in Ayorhia (it's the town Ella's friend is from and that the Prince goes to) a land where everyone sings, but none so well or uniquely as Aza. Unfortuanately for her it's also a land where most people are quite pretty and she is considered ugly simply because she doesn't look like everyone else.. But then she ends up in court, helping the new Queen and falling for the Prince. Levine is one of the best fairytale writers in modern times, and I also enjoy her books.

June

Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar- AWESOME book, loved it! I've been on a really good book streak lately. I picked this book up by accident, and just read the first few chapters, and it grabbed me from there. If you get the chance I highly recommend this book. It takes place in England and Scotland and its about a "Royal" family of werewolves, and is told through the stories of several characters- Kalix, the 17 year old banished werewolf girl, hooked on laudunum and slightly crazy, the human Daniel and his roommate/unrequited hippie love Moonglow, Kalix's warring werewolf brothers, Thrix, Kalix's older sister who is also an Enchantress and clothing designer, and a crazy Fire Elemental Queen and her almost adopted neice. If it weren't for all the other wonderful books I have been reading lately than this book review would be in all caps. So good!!!
I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle- My friend Courtney picked this for our Book Club, and if you love every Jphn Huges movie from 16 Candles to the Breakfast Club to Pretty in Pink, then this book was written as a love note to you. The book open each chapter with a qoute from some awesome teen movie (Chapter 6- Lloyd Dobler from Say Anything- take a minute to *sigh* over John Cusack). The main character is Denis, debate team captain, class valedictorian, and uncommonally sweaty nerd boy. At graduation he tells everyone that he loves Beth Cooper- head cheerleader. Beth has a crazy Marine boyfriend, Denis has a possible gay, movie quoting best friend, Rich, and much hilarity ensues over the course of one night. The book is already being made into a movie with Hayden Panattiere. Doyle used to write for the Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead. Not many books make me laugh outloud, but this one did, and often. So funny, although it's a bit racey for the younger readers.

Marked by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast- well, I picked this up because 1). It's about Vampires and 2). The authors are a mother and daughter duo here in Oklahoma. Basically the idea of the book is a school for Vampires. And you're not bitten, but rather Marked by the Goddess Nyx (cresent moon on your forehead). The school is 4 years long, but sometimes people reject the change and die. It's a series of books, and it's okay. Probably good enough for me to continue reading the series but nothing to get too excited about. I actually read this book before the I Love You, Beth Cooper book, I just forgot about. Fortunately I keep a Book Diary as well and do my best to update that every few days.
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen- I read part of this book when it was in hardback this winter, but recently bought it in softback. I started over at the beginning because it's such a magical beauty! I love her writing style and I went out and bought her second book, The Sugar Queen in hardback. And I'm pretty picky what I buy in hardback. If you like Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic) then I would hazard to guess you will like Sarah Addison Allen even more. While her characters possess a certain magic, it's rarely as tragic and heartbreaking as Hoffman's books tend to be, while staying away from being sappy and corny. This is a book I will be re-reading in the future.

OH! Great idea, I'm in! :D

I have no idea how fast I'm gonna read since erm... I'm still on Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann since .. December. XD .. but a) the book is really, really, reaaaally fat and b) I have almost no time to read with my exams so soon. xD

Oh well, I'll finish it soon and then I'm onto the challenge xD ... but like Rai, I'll probably be doing this just for mere fun rather than for the competition. Challenge: How Many Books Can You Read in Six Months? 436937

Book list (read after feb 21st):

1) "Witches abroad" by Terry Pratchett

Heeey. How did I not know about this until now? xD All right, starting from April then, and the end of April at that, but ah well...here's what I can remember.

April

1. The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
2. First Truth by Dawn Cook
3. The Roald Dahl Omnibus (a collection of adult short stories by Roald Dahl)
4. Marley and Me by John Grogan
5. The Naming by Alison Croggon
6. A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce
7. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (rereads count too, right? xD)
8. The Appeal by John Grisham
9. Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark

May

10. Perfect Girl by Mary Hogan (kind of good, though a bit geared-towards-14-year-olds. Also, all the advice about men in the book was too forced. Kind of a weak save at the end where the author presses the point that all the generalized advice about men is kinda rubbish, because, well, all generalizations suck. Usually. xD)
11. Diving In by Kate Cann (typical)
12. High Heels and Holidays by Kasey Michaels (weird. Also, the author lacks self-esteem. Some books you have to read, because they teach you how NOT to write.)
13. Blackthorn Winter by Kathryn Reiss (A little too...staged. But then, mysteries tend to be, I guess.)
14. The Doomsday Conspiracy by Sidney Sheldon (Awesome. Like watching another Bourne film. Except this has aliens in it.)
15. She Went All the Way by Meg Cabot (Why can't all books be like this? Cabot should win some sort of award for chick lit. I hereby crown her queen of chick lit.)
16. Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella (Adorable.)
17. The Host by Stephenie Meyer (Heartbreakingly gorgeous.)
18. Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway (Awesome. Just awesome! I'm so hyped up on it now, I feel like dancing!)
19. The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson (All her teen books follow the same basic plotline, still they all have a unique flavor and they're really good.)
20. A Song for Summer by Eva Ibbotson
21. The Dogs Around Me by Ken Foster (This is a Scary Dog Book, where the author tends to like dogs more than people...I mean, I like dogs, but if I had to choose either one or the other, I'd choose people. The arrogance of Dog People who believe that dogs are better than most people really annoys me.)
22. Airhead by Meg Cabot (I got this book for free! Scholastic gave out 200 ARC's and I got one! *huggles free awesome book*)

June

23. Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella
24. Daniel Isn't Talking by Marti Leimbach
25. Late Night Talking by Leslie Schnur
26. Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
27. Don't Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer
28. Pandora's Daughter by Iris Johansen
29. Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
30. Celebutantes by Amanda Goldberg
31. Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella
32. The Dog Walker by Leslie Schnur

July

33. Avatars: So This Is How It Ends (Book One) by Tui T. Sutherland (Surprisingly good, though I was surprised when
Spoiler:

34. Shopaholic Takes Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella (It's so cute, I just had to read it again xD)
35. Queen of Babble in the Big City by Meg Cabot
36. Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg Cabot
37. Alphabet Weekends by Elizabeth Noble
38. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Anne Brashares
39. The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by Anne Brashares
40. The Last Summer (of You and Me) by Anne Brashares

Currently reading:

*Agile Web Development with Rails, 2nd edition by by Dave Thomas and David Heinemeier Hansson

*Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby by why the lucky stiff

Books That I Gave Up On, Cos They're Beyond Weird:

>Behindlings by Nicola Barker (From Amazon: "this novel suffers from a general anemia of character and plot"...)

>The Worst Years of Your Life, collection of short stories edited by Mark Jude Poirier (you know how indie films are so often just plain weird because they're trying so hard not to be mainstream? That's what this book is like. Gimme a break.)

Yes it is really good so far - the first book is kind of like -um okay, only because it's giving you the info on all the characters - but once you get into the series it's REALLY hard to put them down. I need to get to the store to pick up the rest of them but when I do I will be starting on book 11 so for me to continue reading that far into the series has to say something.

Warning tho - Every book ends on a cliffhanger, so when you finish one you pretty much need the next one in hand or it will drive you insane. Well it drives me insane ^_^

Reading books for free at Barnes and Noble/Borders/Hastings- almost my favorite thing to do in the known universe.

- I'm already on my second read through this month of all of these books. I have to say when I read Eclipse the first time it was a bit painful. I was not expecting Bella to be in love with Jacob, and so I didn't enjoy the book as well as I might have. I have since made peace with Jake, so now I can enjoy Eclipse a lot more, although I still don't get him and Bella... Oh well, hopefully Breaking Dawn will be better for us Bedward fans! Plus, I am also listening to all three audio books in my spare time... so I have no actual idea how many more times I'll have re-read these three books at the end of the month, but lets just count it as once per book to be fair.

No Choice But Seduction by Johanna Lindsey- no offense ot any of you romance lovers out there, but generally I stay away from this genre. I hate buying these books, so I just skip them. Except for Lindsey... plus this was a Malory book, and I love the Malory's. Lindsey is pretty good on developing characters and romance, of setting a time period for you. So I feel slightly less embarrassed to read her novels. XD

The India Fan by Victoria Holt
- one of my all time favorite books. I re-read this quite a bit. I can quote whole parts of this novel, I just love it. I love the characters, I love the sense of history in the book (It takes place in England and India). It's like a good, good friend. I usually re-read it several times a year. It never gets old, you know?

Queen of Babble Gets Hitched by Meg Cabot
- Lizzie made the right choice! Of course I knew she would... Okay. I hoped that she would make the right choice. Which is strange, because in the very first Queen of Babble book I never really saw two sequels, I thought she had gotten her happily ever after, but I'm glad I was wrong.

Ocean City: Bon Fire
Ocean City: Heat Wave
by Katherine Applegate
- I have all of these books somewhere... although I think the recently released versions have a different title. I read these books some 15 years ago, when I actually vacationed (and then lived for a year) in Ocean City, Maryland. It's about a group of summer housemates in Ocean City working for a summer before going off to college, and then returning a year later... there's 11 or 12 books in all I think. But I love the characters, and even though the writing is fairly simple, I love re-discovering these books. Plus I can read them in a couple of hours easy.

A New Dawn by Various Authors- Borders (the book chain) came out with this, it's basically a bunch of teen author's essays on different aspects on the Twilight series. It was interesting, different opinions were offered up, such as is Edward Cullen a good boyfriend or sociopath? I know it sounds ridiculous, but it was an interesting read. The last entry is a funny mythical debate on the series between some snooty professors who claim that the books are too sexual for teens and two online fan girls. Fan girls totally win.

The Ruins by Scott Smith- I watched this movie recently. I had been hoping it was good, because I knew it was supposed to have been based on a really good book. But the movie disappointed me. I was telling my co-worker, Matt, about it, and he went out and got the book which I just finished reading. It is much better than the movie! I won't give away too much, but some vacationing college age students meet a German and some Greeks while in Cabo. The German's brother had gone off earlier in the week with some chick on an archaeological dig, but had left a map. It's time that the Germans return home, so Matthias wants to go collect his brother. The others agree to help him, but only one of the Greeks is sober enough to go the next day. So they end up searching for some ruins near a Mayan village, and stumble upon a hill covered in this beautiful vine plant. No sign of Matthias' brother, nor of the archeologists. Then for some unknown reason the Mayan's show up, first trying to get the group away from the hill, but then after one of the girls steps on the vine, they are herded up the hill and not allowed to leave. The book is very disturbing in parts, but still a good thrilling read. If you like that kind of story. Which I do. XD
