Here are my five reviews.

Comedy:

Scoobie doo 2: Monsters Unleashed- I love this film. It really showed that scoobie doo can be done with real actors and a computer generated Great Dane. The direction was very well done and the layout of scene's was brilliantly planned out. I am very glad they brought our canine friend onto the big screen and hope they make another film of it. I award this movie 4 and a half stars

Horror:

Childs Play- This movie, even though it was made in the 80's is truely spin chilling. I mean, a possessed doll coming to life is one thing, but when it starts to murder people it is completely terrifying. I totally could watch this film over and over agin, for the scare and also for the entertainment values. I award this movie 5 stars.

Musical:

Sweeny Todd- This is the best musical I've ever seen. I cannot describe it in one word. It is so utterly brilliant that I cannot stand to even say anything bad about it. I have to say Johnny Depp is an amazing singer and I love the whole plot of the movie. Again, I award this movie five stars.

Animation:

Bee Movie- This made me think that bee's are really cute. The direction was amazing and the voices were great and I loved the fact that they had bees talking and speaking they're mind. It is so great. I cannot fault it. I give this movie 4 and a half stars.

Thriller:

Crash: An excellent movie dealing with issues that are a big part of society today, especially racisum. It shows how the human race can hurt people in so many levels, but we can also be kind, patiant and caring if we work in harmony. Though I didn't really understand the plot, I give this movie four stars.

Romance: Roman Holiday.
A GREAT film with my idol, Audrey Hepburn. It's one of those Black&White films, perfect for a rainy day. Audrey plays escaped Princess Ann in Rome, and meets a cynical reporter, who wants to sell the story. But, love gets in the way. An unexpected ending, very well made and very emotional. I give it five stars! Film Lover Badge 436937 (I had to cut it short or I'd ramble on and on about this film...)

Period Drama: Forrest Gump.
Another FANTASTIC film with Tom Hanks, a really great actor. Tom plays an incredibly stupid man called Forrest Gump and he lives through the 50-60's, during the Vietnam War, the landing on the moon, plays in the National Ping-Pong team of America, meets presedent Kennedy and Nixon. It mentions the Watergate scandal (he calls security because he can see some lit torches and thinks they're looking for a fuse), attends a Black Panter gathering... And he is just the simplest man who see's all this simply. Original, VERY well directed and acted, a must see classic. Five stars without a doubt.

Comedy: Something About Mary.
All I can say is: Funny. With Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, it's no classic, but it'll cheer you up. A man called Ted is trying to find his High-School sweetheart called Mary, and hires a private investigator. The investigator falls in love with Mary, and it's soon evident that they're not the only ones! If the chance comes up, watch it, it's a laugh. Four and a half stars.

Animation: Shrek.
SO good. It goes against all the stereotypes of a fairytale, but is actually closer to an older fairystory before Disney came along. What seems like an innocent joke could have a larger meaning... The idea is just so original and obviously very sucessful (I can quote most of the film) Film Lover Badge 436937 I think that it is a must see film, for all ages and a good laugh. Five stars Film Lover Badge 436937

Science-Fiction/Thriller/Horror (I'm not sure what it is...): Signs.
A seriously freaky film. A man played by Mel Gibson finds crop circles in his crops. All animals are crazy, and there have been sightings... of aliens. This is a story about how this man who lost his faith in god when his wife died tries to survive along with his family against these aliens. Very well shot, as you don't actually see the villains apart from a shadow, or some fingers creeping underneath the door...
Watch it at an older age than ten (learnt the hard way), but a must see also. Five stars. Film Lover Badge 436937

Sci-Fi: Wanted

I recently watched Wanted over the 4th of July holiday, and was impressed. The movie is a cross between Fight Club and the Matrix, but unlike the Matrix the movie does not take itself too seriously. Although some would term this an action movie, it's roots are deep in science fiction soil. James McAvoy plays a downtrodden loser stuck in a hideous job and saddled with a cheating girlfriend and best friend. Suddenly, while at the Pharmacy refilling his anxiety medicine, his life changes. He meets Fox (Jolie), an assassin who's targets are picked out by Fate herself and he enters the world of The Fraternity. But in this world nothing is what it appears, and while learning to bend bullets, James' character also learns a little about becoming his own man. The effects and stunts are amazing, and I personally can't wait until it's out on video!

True Life: Control

Control is a movie based on the life of Ian Curtis, lead singer of the British band Joy Division. Despite their short career, only 5 years, Joy Division had a huge impact on the music scene, giving birth to new wave and inspiration to everyone from The Cure to Coldplay. It showcases the tragedy and brilliance that was Ian Curtis. He suffered from epilepsy and took medication to control the seizures, but the medicine also caused him deep depression. He married while he was still a teen, and joined Joy Division, leaving behind his life as a civil servant. Soon the tormented Curtis fell in love with another woman, and the pressure of the love triangle leads to his first suicide attempt. Despite the success of Joy Division, Ian is unable to overcome the shadows in his life. He finally succeeds in hanging himself, leaving behind a young daughter, and a grieving world that is worse off for his loss musical talent. The movie is a sad one, but the acting is brilliant and moving. Check it out, especially if you've never even heard of Joy Division. Trust me, the Jonas brothers could learn a thing or two.

Musical: Once

Once is not your mother's musical. The film tells the story of a Guy and a Girl. They are never given names in the movie, which makes it easy for the viewer to copy and paste themselves into the roles. The guy is back home in Ireland, depressed over his long time girlfriend's infidelity, and to help out his widowed father. When not working in his dad's vacuum repair shop he spends his time singing on the streets for cash, where he meets the girl. The girl is a recent immigrant to Ireland, and she lives with her mother and daughter. She left her husband behind, although it is clear the relationship was not good between them. She plays the piano and soon she and the guy are making music together. She inspires him to give his music one more shot, and together they gather a band of musicians and record an album. The story does not follow your typical love story, but rather illustrates the truth that sometimes a person comes into your life for just a brief time and touches it. The music is beautiful, the acting natural, you really get the feel of a documentary at times, as if you are watching real life. Nothing comes easy for any of the characters, giving it a strong dose of realism, while still retaining charm. Once is now one of my all time favorite movies, and I recommend it to anyone, it's an especially good date movie!

Foreign Language: Like Water For Chocolate

Like Water For Chocolate tells the tale of forbidden love in delicious manner! Tita is the youngest daughter in her family, and her cruel mother decides that Tita must never marry and devote herself to her care. Tita falls in love with Pedro, but when they cannot not marry Pedro takes drastic measures to stay by Tita's side. Unwanted by her mother at birth, Tita has mainly been raised in the kitchens, where she learns to cook magical meals. While her older sisters are free to marry, Tita is bound to her mother's side, and is horrorfied when Pedro marries her eldest sister, even though he does it to be by her side. Obstacle after obstacle throws itself in the pathway to Pedro and Tita's true love, but through her cooking she is able to tell the story of their great love. It's just a beautiful, magical film (and book!), and another great romantic film to curl up to with your honey!

Thriller: Copycat

One of my all time thriller favorites! Sigourney Weaver plays a psychologist suffering from agoraphobia after a brutal attack from a serial killer played by Harry Connick, Jr (he goes from crooner to crazy pretty well!). Dermot Mulroney (swoon!) and Holly Hunter are two detectives that seek her out trying to get her help with a copycat serial killer. It seems that the copycat killer is interested in recreating the attack Weaver survived from Connick, only he plans on getting it right. I (sadly and perhaps a bit unsettingly) love movies about serial killers, and I love Dermot Mulroney, so for me this is a near perfect flick. It's a bit of an older movie, but it still stands up pretty well to modern technology (I dream of having the computer set-up that Weaver's character has!). So if you like a little chill with you're thrill, then check Copycat out!

Film lover Badge

Romance

Romeo and Juliet

One of the best loved plays of all time adapted into a movie with a modern day twist. This version of Romeo and Juliet is set in modern day America still with the use of Shakespearian language. Staring Leonardo Dicaprio (Titanic) and Claire Danes (Stardust) this romantic play script is one of the best all time classical movies which is a must have for every family. With the perfect concoction of love, hate, violence and adventure this movie will take our favorite love story and bring it to a world we all know and love, modern day America. Making it one of the most remembered movies of our time. The best bit of every story is the romance and this one is full of it.

Horror

The mist

An adaptation of Stephen Kings best selling novel we have the horror movie made of The mist. With great special effects and a plot so deep with twists and turns this movie does the book justice with its largely talented acting crew this movie will draw the attention of all movie lovers. Taking the idea of ‘Pan labyrinth’ of the ever looming threat, this single thing is what makes this horror movie as great as it is. With the twists and turns and bumps and jumps of this movie it is bound to give any viewer a fright. Thomas Jane (Buffy the vampire slayer) gives an award winning performance portraying all the emotions perfectly.

Musical

The Sound of music

A beautiful story filled with interesting characters and beautiful songs it will warm the heart of any viewer. The beautiful songs are memorable lyrics that people will be singing for years to come. With its 5 Oscar wins this movie is one that will never go off the shelves. With interesting characters and costumes the sound of music is an amazing movie with fantastic acting. Julie Andrews breathtaking voice is one that will be played over and over again in every house hold.

Animation

Kung fu panda

Kung fu panda a funny animated movie with stars such as Jack Black and Jackie Chan. This movie aimed at children of a younger age appeals to a much wider variety. The comedy of this movie will make everyone laugh. But not only is it designed to amuse but it also carries a very moral story saying that it doesn’t matter what you weight is if you want something badly enough go for it and you might surprise yourself. Just like Panda did. This movie is one that will be remembered throughout our time, giving us all a fun and upbeat movie to watch.

Period Drama

The other Boleyn girl

A thrilling period drama which not only entertains the viewer but educates them of the History of England in the Tudor era. A movie which combines love, hate and friendship to make one of the greatest love triangles of our time. Two sisters torn apart by their love for a king. This breath takingly brilliant movie brings in stars such as Natalie Portman (star wars) and Scarlett Johansson (The nannie diaries) to create this master piece of a period drama. The beautiful acting is accompanied by elegant gowns and old fashioned balls to create the perfect recipe for a historical movie.

# Musical: Hairspray

This movie is great fun for the whole family. It has everything: Catchy songs, loveable characters and a you-can-do-it! attitude which lasts the whole way through the film and proves more inspiring than originally anticipated. It's one of those movies that you can watch over and over and never tire of, because the themes are everlasting and always relevant. John Travolta is a stand-out performer in this stellar remake of the original Hairspray, and you can't put it past any of the other A-list celebrities, they can sing, and they do it well.

# Comedy: The Wedding Singer

Classic Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the Wedding Singer is a heartfelt, well-loved family comedy that remains as timeless as the Eighties with its soundtrack, hairstyles and fashion. You can't pass The Wedding Singer without laughing, crying, and sighing as the Happily Ever After happens - with Billy Idol to help along the way.

# Horror: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

A film adaptation of the book Perfume written by Patrick Süskind, the film creates a mixed reaction in this reviewer. It starts out with a very abstract concept: a boy, orphaned, with a heightened sense of smell. He grows older and becomes obsessed with capturing the perfect scent. In this state of mind, he sets out to bottle innocence, and ends up creating a string of murders in his all-consuming quest.

While a movie that is hard to watch because of what it symbolises, it is still a beautiful work of art. The acting is impeccable - Alan Rickman plays the enemy of the main character, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille - the storyline has everything you could ask of it, and the constant stream of irony and humour that follows the horror desensitises you to the reality of what is being said.

It's a movie that intrigues you from start to finish (but it's definitely not for the kiddies!).

# Sci-Fi/Foreign Language: Pan's Labyrinth

Hauntingly bittersweet, Pan's Labyrinth asks the question: which is the better, reality or fantasy? It's never quite made clear which is real, the world Ofelia lives in, where the horrors of war cannot harm her, or the one where her stepfather is a cruel, merciless man who has doomed both her and her mother. While this battle of real/fictional leaves you room for pause, you do not want to stop as the amazing effects and perfectly told story are heartwarming and heart stopping at the same time.

# Animation: Barbie in the Princess and the Pauper

One of the better Barbie movies, Barbie in the Princess and the Pauper has a few of the most annoyingly - and yet amazingly - catchy songs in the whole retinue of Barbie movies. The story follows the traditional tale of the Princess and the Pauper. It keeps up a good balance of drama and humour the way through, through such mediums as animals and the traditional 'dunderhead' lackeys. Worth a watch, but perhaps not two.

Comedy: Ella Enchanted
I loved this movie. This movie allowed for imagination to take over. It was about magical fairies, some had great gifts and other gave gifts. Some of these gifts aren’t what you would expect, as Ella found out. I loved how she met so many interesting creatures throughout her journey. I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.

Thriller: Kiss of the Dragon
This movie is amazing. I gave you such a hero and villain setting. Jet Li is an amazing actor and shows how good he is in martial arts. It’s not clearly obvious if he gets the girl or not, but it has such an action packed fighting from the very beginning. I rate this film 5 out of 5.

Animation: Mulan
A great animation movie. This is one of the greatest all time favourite animation movies. Mulan shows character and courage to help her family and make her father proud of her. Upon the way she meets a guy named Shang, her leader. I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Sci-Fi: Transformers
This movie was a good sci-fi. It played a bit of romance and action all in one. What better then a movie bringing transformers back to life? It was an amazing emotional movie that shows that machinery still has feelings. I give this movie a 5 out of 5.

Period drama: Courage Mountain
This movie was a creative poly that showed drama and action. It’s a classic Heidi film where she gets sent to a school to improve her ladyness. Also she falls in love with actor Peter who is several years older then her. I give this movie a 3 out of 5.

Comedy: Scary Movie

If you haven’t this, then you are really out of date. If you like laughing, then you need to watch this. It takes just about every scary movie from 2000 and mix it up into one hilarious comedy. You have I know what you did last summer, Scream, plus other scary or nonsense movies mixed into this one movie. I give it 4 out of 5

Musical: Sweeny Todd

You have seen him play the good guy, maybe a bad guy, but what about an evil crazed barber? Johnny Deep is a great actor and this movie is great. Gruesome and the music addictive, it’s great. Many of your favorite British actors play in this. The music is great, the actors are funny yet scary at the same time, and a weird but great plot. I give it 5 out of 5

Romance: Notebook

Noah and Allie were two different people. Allie was rich and Noah was poor, but yet, during a deal, they realize they are both falling for each other. After that summer, she leaves, never seeing him until years later. Allie was getting married when she found Noah and memories came back. She decided to visit him, but realizes she still has feelings she thought she didn’t have anymore. When she realizes it, she cuts her wedding off and goes back to Noah. Together for years, they finally get put into a nursing home, where Noah reads their life story to her. I give this movie 5 out of 5

Animation: Snow White

A classic story between a princess, evil step mother, and a prince. Plus seven little men. Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, but her step mother doesn’t like it. Having the butcher do anyway with her, he can not, seeing as he loves her. So she runs away, only to find a small house. Thinking no one lives there, she decides to make it her new home. But when the seven men return, well, everything comes crazy. The step mother finds out that Snow is still alive and decides to take her out herself. Giving her a poison apple, Snow has to wait for her True Love’s First Kiss. I give this 4 out of 5

Horror: Dawn of the Dead(2004)

This has to be the stupidest horror movie ever. It had no plot, besides the fact that zombies were taking over. The effects were horrible. The zombies were as fake as Pamela Anderson. Everyone looked like they had to much drugs in their systems. I have to give this movie a 1 out of 5

PostSubject: Re: Film Lover Badge   Film Lover Badge EmptySun Mar 01 2009, 15:47

Romance: A love story known to all would have to be the story of Jack and Rose from the 1997 Titanic movie. Set during a real event, this movie effectively brings us through their whirlwind romance, from the first meeting, to the first sparks of love, through death, and finally being back together again. This movie is a definite tearjerker that touched everyone I knew including me. Whether it was the willful Rose or the mischievous but deep Jack Dawson, this is the perfect movie to show that love can conquer all, even death.

Animation: Favorite animated movie, hands down would have to be Pixar’s Finding Nemo. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve watched this or how old it is, this movie never fails to bring a smile to my face. With so many great characters and lines, the star of the movie is by far the forgetful but loveable Dory character. Her character’s facial expression and lines are just so surprising and hilarious. Yet it’s the story that gets to you too. A simple movie about fish, brought up to so many levels. It’s also one of the few movies that make me annoyed with human afterwards. Sad but true. Just keep swimming!

Musical: One of the musicals I loved would have to be the 2007 adaptation of Hairspray. The acting in here was superb as the casting directors obvious did a terrific job with everyone in the movie as they all complimented each other. Not only were they perfect casted for each part but the singing was also great. A very fun and entertaining movie to watch.

Comedy: Another movie that would keep you rocking with laughter is the the 2000 American comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Benjamin Bratt. This movie is about a sarcastic wise cracking tom boyish FBI agent that is forced to enter the Miss United States pageant, something that she’s entirely NOT trained to do. You’ll laugh as you watch her struggle to do mundane tasks such as walk in high heels and put on make up, fun for the entire family. This is one of the movies that I never fail to rewatch on tv even if I had just watched it the night before.

Horror: When I think of horror movies, the first thing that comes to my mind is Child’s Play. Although an old movie, it still guarantees to get me to jump at just the thought of it. The concept of the movie is what makes it so frightening. A doll, an innocent child’s plaything, that’s possessed and out to kill you. It could be anywhere since it’s so small, and the worst part is, it can’t die. The scary looking Chucky didn’t help things either. (Serious, what kind of mother would buy that for her child?!?) I thought that perhaps since I haven’t watched it since I was a kid, it couldn’t possibly be as scary as I remembered. After all, the effects couldn’t nearly be as good as the movies nowadays. I was wrong. I could only watch about 10 minutes of the middle before having to turn it off. This just shows that it’s not only the effects that make the story but more importantly, the actual story itself.

(I have to say, just rereading the plot online gave me goosebumps lol)

Romance: Twilight ♥♥♥♥♥

Twilight is based on the super-popular book series by Stephenie Meyer. The director, Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Thirteen) brought the first book to life by taking a huge risk. Everyone who has read the books have their own image and opinions of how the characters look like, but I think they did a brilliant job with the cast. Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, How To Be) brought up many complains as he was cast as Edward Cullen, the beautiful 108-year old vampire, stuck in the body of a 17-year old. Even I thought it would be a disaster, but then he kind of grew on me. As for Bella, I couldn't have been more thrilled with seeing Kristen Stewart (Panic Room, Into the Wild) play it out.

Because the story is told from Bella's point of view, the script had to be changed a bit to make the movie more interesting, and flowing. As with most books-turned-to-movies, not every little scene could be in the movie, which of course made the hardcore fans outraged - I'm not complaining, I thought the movie was brilliant. It brings the constant pain of impossible love, perfectly balanced with a small amount of action. What's a better choice for the perfect romance movie than a story about a vampire and a normal human girl falling in love with each other?

Comedy: Confessions of a Shopaholic ♥♥♥♥

Being a person who hates shopping, this movie was a nightmare to watch if I let myself think about it too much. I had a panic attack through the entire movie! But if we forget that tiny little issue, I must say it was very good. Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Definitely Maybe) plays Rebecca Bloomwood, who has a slight problem; she likes shopping. A lot.

The movie is based on Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic book series, and the movie is in fact a combination of the two first books, The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Abroad. If you've read the books, you can easily spot out the similarities.

True Life: Gia ♥♥♥♥

The movie is about the life of Gia Carangi, a supermodel in the late 70s. Angelina Jolie (Mr & Mrs Smith, Wanted) who plays Gia, makes an excellent job bringing the pain and need of affection Gia goes through. It's almost heartbreaking to watch the movie, when you think that she actually went through with it all... Gia, I mean. I read somewhere that Gia was one of the first women to die of AIDS, which is something.

The acting is brilliant. I've always like Angelina Jolie, because she really gets into the role she plays, and this is no exception.

Period Drama: Atonement ♥♥♥♥

This could easily fit the category of 'romance', too, but mwehh! :D It sets in 1935 England, where a young girl, with an incredible wild imagination, called Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) sees something from her window that she can't quite understand. That puts in motion series of events, and one small lie destroys two lives for good.

The book is incredibly boring. Honestly. The movie was so much better, and very touching. It's about understanding the difference between right and wrong, forgiveness and making ammends for the rest of your life. The ending was quite unexpected - I won't spoil it here - and I have to admit I cried like a baby when I watched it in the movies.

And let me take this moment to worship Joe Wright; he's such a great director! Onyl he could've pulled it off!

Foreign Language: Beebopalooba Åmål ♥♥♥

Beebopalooba Åmål, or Show Me Love (English title), is a Swedish movie about two different kind of girls. There's Elin, the beautiful, popular girl, who's bored of life entirely. Then there's Agnes - the sad, lonely and miserable one, who just happens to be secretly in love with Elin. Normally I'm not a great fan of Swedish movies in general; they're basically all the same. Either there's rape involved, or just teen angst to the limit, that puts Thirteen in shame. But I remember watching this one long time ago (when VCR was still 'in' xD), and it somehow stuck with me. Maybe it was the great acting performances, or the great music - or just all around great plotline. I'd recommend this movie to everyone who's atleast a little bit interested in foreign films - you know, foreign film doesn't mean it has to be anime or anything like it.

You can go Europe xD

Keith, 2008 (Romance)

"Love is a force you can't control". This proves to be true for 17 year old Natalie, senior high schooler with grades through the roof and an assured scholarship for her father's dream college. She goes through life on a schedule, thinking she's got it all figured out until she comes across Keith, a classmate who's got nothing to lose, and there starts a journey that opens her eyes to what life should really be. This movie was a case of love at first sight for me. It's not the most original movie out there, it won't make you gasp of surprise with a shocking ending, nor will it cause great discussions and debates among watchers. But it will touch you and reach out to you with a message in its own kind. Jesse McCartney is surprising in his role, and Elisabeth Harnois shows a great display of talent, both perfect for their roles. If I had to give advice for one movie for anyone to watch, it would most definitely have to be this one. Rent it, watch it, buy it and watch it again. You won't regret it.

First Wives Club, 1996 (Comedy)

Back in college, Elise, Brenda and Annie were the best of friends. Now that they've reached their forties, there's only one thing to bring them together on a common ground - their failed marriages. All three divorced by men who left them for younger women (much too young in certain cases), they re-unite after years of drifting apart upon the death of their fourth old friend, who committed suicide after her own ex-husband remarried a younger woman. That's when they decide to come together and seek for the thing they all want - revenge, in a completely hilarious manner. Goldie Hawn, Bette Middler and Diane Keaton are simply brilliant in this movie, showing every facets of their talent. I'm very fond of this movie, having first watched it when I was a kid, and still loving to watch it any time I can up to this day. It's always a great laugh, with a few well placed touching moments, and a cast that's well worth its while.

Fly Away Home, 1996 (True Life)

Based on a real life story, Fly Away Home tells the story of a young girl who, after having recently lost her mother, has to move from Australia, the country she's been living in since a young age, to go back to her estranged father's side in Ontario, Canada. Lost and feeling out of place, she one day comes across fourteen geese eggs abandoned in the forest and takes them home, tucking them away carefully, surrounding them with warmth. The next day, she comes home from school to find that a flock of baby geese has replaced the eggs, and starts raising playing mother goose to them. However fall is approaching, and birds are starting to fly south - without anyone to teach them how to fly or where to go, these geese will still get the urge to leave, and get lost. This is when her father, an inventor with rather crazy ideas, comes up with the idea of building two engines that will fly at a slow enough speed to lead the geese. This movie shows the courage of a lost family to mend the broken pieces, and the strenght of spirit of a young teenager who develops a true love for those geese she's raised. I think it's a very sweet movie that can be watched by any person of any age, and it will still be touching and funny with a few tear jerkers along the way.

The Day After Tomorrow, 2004 (Action)

Though greatly dramatized, The Day After Tomorrow is a movie that calls to attention one of today's most talked about subject, the climate change, the green house effect, global warming, when it shows a series of natural disasters caused by a climate shift that brings the northern hemisphere of the earth to a new ice age. Being a movie, and an Hollywood, perfect blockbuster movie at that, it was obviously necessary to make the effects and the drama greater than its current situation, but I think it still shows a very interesting aspect of this debate. Though overblown to big proportions, I think this movie is one that is fascinating from beginning to end, action packed in a way that isn't redundant or what we are used to (no shot guns and bloody fights that show gore that would almost belong in an horror movie), with just enough lightness through it not to make it too heavy. It keeps us at the edge of our seats, and leaves you thinking as the credits roll, with the addition of a brilliant cast of all ages (Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid and Ian Holm).

Aurore, 2005 (Foreign Language)

This heart wrenching Quebec movie tells the true story of young Aurore Gagnon, a french canadian girl of ten years old who, following the loss of her mother and the second wedding of her father - merely a day after the funerals - suffers the mistreatments of her disturbed step-mother. This horrific happening could be the root for any kind of evil step-mother tale, and for two hours we watch as this child's life becomes darker with every day. The story of Aurore Gagnon was adapted more than once for the big screen (the version I am referring to was released in 2005) and though some of the earlier versions focused mostly on the several wounds inflicted by her father's new wife, ranging from bruises to cuts and burns, this one calls to another aspect that killed Aurore - silence, back when other people's business was none of yours. From cause of these abuses and the lack of intervention from people who knew what was going on but couldn't say anything, Aurore will die after less than a year of physical and mental torture, from exhaustion, blood poisonng and over fifty inflicted wounds. This movie is not one for the faint - aside from a few images showing some physical violence and injuries, the subject of it is a heavy one, extremely hard to deal with. This could not count as a movie I'd want to watch again - upon watching it, I left the theater shaken and silent, and though I rarely cry, this one reduced me to a state of not even being able to walk as I literally sobbed in my seat. But I couldn't say either that I regret having seen it. This is the kind of movie that brings many reflections as to these realities that should not exist, but are still there to this day.

27 Dresses (Romance)

Yes, techincally it's a romantic comedy but it's still a romance at heart. 27 Dresses follows the story of Jane a woman who embodies the statement "Always a bridesmaid, never the bride.". The title coming from the fact that she's been a bridesmaid a whopping 27 times. Her life takes a turn for the more complicated when her sister falls in love with the man of her dreams and then asks her to plan the wedding. Matters don't get better when a nosy newspaper writer gets a hold of her planner, showing that she's been in a few weddings this year. The ending is expected, no shocking twists out there, just a nice happy ending that you can almost call from the second the right people are on the screen. There is a lot of comedy well placed during the movie and it is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Hotel Rwanda (True Life)

Hotel Rwanda is the true story of Paul Rusesbagina who saved over 1,200 refugees during the Rwandan Genocide. Although he was in no danger himself, his wife and children were Hutu targets of the genocide that killed over 800,000 people. He uses bribes and his brains to keep his family and all the refugees who come to seek safety in his hotel safe, putting his life at risk for supplies to keep the people alive, giving almost every physical possession he had for their safety, even going so far as blackmail when it seems that things won't get any better. It's an amazing story, though it does contain some violence (it is a war movie in that sense and some of it is necessary for the story to hold as much meaning as it does) it focuses a lot more on what Paul has to go through to make everything turn out right. Knowing that it's true makes the film all the more emotion provoking and you'll find yourself on the edge of your seat while waiting to see what becomes of Paul and his hotel.

Cars (Animation)

Cars is a Disney Pixar film that came out in 2006. It takes place in a land that is made up of all, you guessed it, cars. It's one of the best newer Disney movies out there, in my opinion. The whole movie is set around Lightning McQueen, a famous racecar who is this far away from winning the Piston Cup in his rookie year. The race turns out to be a three way tie between the two other contestants (Chick Hicks and The King) and Lightning, so they have to have a final do it out race in California. On his way there Lightning ends up falling out of his carrying truck, whom he tries to follow without success. The racecar ends up trashing a small town called Radiator Springs, which he is sentenced to fix. From there arrogant Lightning must try to work with the small town nobodies to get to his race on time. Since it's Disney a happy ending is a given but it's also a witty film with a few cute moments.

17 Again (Comedy)

17 Again is by no means the most original film out there, it tells a story that many have told before and ends in predictability. Despite that, the film is still thoroughly enjoyable and will make you laugh a lot. Mike O'Donnell, the main character, has some issues with the way his life turned out after giving up a college scholarship to propose to his current wife Scarlet, whom he is going through a divorce with. After a weird encounter with a creepy janitor Mike is turned back to his 17 year old self and he sees it as the perfect opportunity to 'do things right'. Of course while trying to do things right he finds out a lot more about his two high school aged kids, whom he is now classmates with. Along the way he makes some hilarious mistakes, learns more about his family and develops an appreciation for what he has.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Musical, duh XD)

High School Musical 3 is clearly the third installment in the High School Musical series. The movie takes us through the Senior year of Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez, Sharpay and Ryan Evans, Chad Danforth, Taylor McKessie and all the other characters that we've come to love through the first two movies. The characters have to deal with the prospect of growing up and going to college, finishing their last musical, going to Prom and doing all the other memorable experiences that come with a Senior year. Singing and dancing is spread throughout the film, whether it is part of the play production (also entitled Senior Year) or it be a random spur of the moment song that fits into the events surrounding it. Another Disney film the ending is happy and almost predictable but still a great movie that will make you feel good.

Romance: Stardust

An epic fantasy movie based off of Neil Gaiman’s book of the same title, Stardust is a movie every lover of fantasy and romance should see. A charming, witty movie starring Charlie Cox and Claire Danes, this movie has it all: adventure, comedy, horror, emotion with an underlying theme of romance and what it truly means to love beneath it all. The romance that forms between Tristian and Yvaine is a romance that will keep hopeless romantics dreaming for years to come. This movie is a must see!

Animation: How to Train Your Dragon

How to Train Your Dragon will continue to surprise audiences with its unexpectedly insightful themes into life while catching the imagination of kids and adults alike with its inspiring and adventurous plot. Beautifully animated in great detail and set to an amazing score by John Powell, the audience is spellbound by an adventurous story of friendship that goes beyond what meets the eye at first glance. This movie should not be underestimated; the captivating story of the boy who befriends a dragon is not only an epic adventure, but a classic story of overpowering past prejudices to overcome even greater challenges.

Musical: Moulin Rouge

Though seemingly odd when first watched, Moulin Rouge is a delightful film featuring the surprising musical talents of Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. This romantic musical uses well known musical tunes from the late 20th century that help make the movie that much more interesting. This movie has everything from drama to comedy and a beautiful forbidden romance as well as deeply moving scenes. An amazing movie with superb costumes and sets, Moulin Rouge will continue to be a favorite movie for many lovers of music and romance.

Western: True Grit

True Grit, a remake of the original movie starring John Wayne, is a movie that delighted and surprised crowds who feared it would not live up to the original. Starring Jeff Bridges and fourteen year old Hailee Steinfield this movie follows much more closely to the original book (so if you’re big on not straying far from the plot lines this would be a perfect movie for you!) than the previous movie. Hailee Steinfield, a unexpected find, plays her part as the young girl whose father was killed by an outlaw perfectly and makes the move even more enjoyable to watch. This classic western story told anew is good for any fans of old western movies.

Thriller: The Bourne Ultimatum

The finale of the Bourne trilogy, The Bourne Ultimatum ends the series with a bang. Matt Damon returns for another astounding performance as the hunted former CIA assassin who remembers nothing of his past as he struggles to remember his murky past. His emotional performance causes the audience to support him one hundred percent and the fight and actions scenes will make everyone sit on the edge of their seat. An intense ride from start to finish, the viewers never get to stop and rest as they watch this epic conclusion play out.

Horror:
Paranormal Activity, 2009
At first, I didn't find this movie really terrifying or something you will really put in the line of horror films like the Exorcism of Emily. But I say, it has an impact. I guess anyone who watched or will watch this movie will experienced being afraid of nothing just because they remember a scene from this movie. A documentary or a scripted one, this is an effective movie for you to be afraid. I just don't know the reason why I have seen two different ending for this movie. Is it because they were released several times that they have to change the ending for the second release?

Foreign Language:
My Sassy Girl, 2001
(I guess this will be categorized as Foreign Language since this is Korean Movie)
The story is really amazing and the first of its kind. The story is very light yet you will feel some romance or "kilig" factor (sorry for my Tagalog I don't know the English for that.) Meeting someone whom should have met years ago after losing your love one is a unique story. I guess Koreans are really good in this type of movie or TV shows. I haven't seen any American movie like this and maybe that is the reason why the Americans made an adaptation for this.

Mystery:
Angels and Demons, 2009
I say this movie is COOL! It made me travel Rome by just watching it. Maybe Dan Brown might be a genius but it is really good to see a novel in the big screen. This is one of a movie adapted from the novel which I found a very minimal difference from its novel. And what I fancied most in this movie is the idea of what is that element being secured and how will it really devastate a city or a country. That is one part of the book I can't really imaging how will it works.

Romance:
A Little Thing Called Love, 2010
A typical story and yet you will fell in love with it. Maybe because anyone of us was able to experience what the characters had experience in some point in our life. It is something you could really relate with. The make-up artists also did a really great job. Being able to transform a real swan into an ugly ducking and back to being a swan, that is so cool! (Just like how I was so amazed with the prosthetic and make-up of Brad Pitt for the movie Benjamin Button.) For those who wants to feel being in highschool once again, this movie is for you. You will fell in love with the characters and in some point, you will realize you had experience the same thing you are seeing now.

Animation:
Megamind, 2010
A villain as the protagonist? You will only see several movies with this concept. And having a real villain to be the real hero is something you would want to see. You will also realize that being always in the spot light will make you feel tired and somehow you would want to escape from that kind of lifestyle. And for those who are bad or those with bad minds will realize that there will always be a tomorrow for you to change. This movie is not a typical comedy animated film. You will really learn lots of things from this movie.

Musical:
Yankee Doodle Dandy:
I love this movie. Starring James Cagney as George M. Cohan, it's a patriotic piece filled with great musical numbers and dancing and singing and acting.
With such songs as: Give my Regards to Broadway, Grand Old Flag, Yankee Doodle Dandy, 45 minutes from Broadway and I'd rather be right than be President.
It's in black and white and can be found on vhs format at least.

Comedy:
Cable Guy:
Starring Jim Carrey, this comedy also touches on some social satire of how kids are raised by the television these days, in this case the main character literally was for the most part. His sense of reality is impaired, and he befriends this guy who he gives free cable to. He rapid cycles through many tv personalities and is sad. It has some funny hijinks and shananigans.

Horror:
Night of the Living Dead:
The first big zombie movie by George Romero
This black and white classic utilizes music well and explores some social themes, spoiler, the one african american man survives the zombies only to be shot by the caucasian police.
It takes place in the fifties or sixties I believe. The dead rise and seek the flesh of the living! Strange radiation causes it. Pretty good scary for it's time, still pretty good.

Animation:
Balto:
Mostly Animated with some live action, the story of Balto is based off of real events and a real heroic dog. Balto part wolf, falls in love with a girl dog, the alpha dog in town likes her too. When the girl dog's little human girl and others fall sick to a pandemic the dogs try to get the medicine, on sled teams. Balto goes forth. The alpha dog gets lost but refuses to acknowledge he is not in control. He makes it so Balto seems to die but shows up without the medicine, but Balto arrives alive with the medicine and gets the girl dog. The Iditerod dog race is in honor of their journey.

Scifi:
Terminator:
From a time in the future where machines ruled, a robot which looked like a man on the outside was sent back to kill John Conner who would be the resistance leader in the future. In later films another robot comes back to save John Conner while another robot more advanced again tries to kill him. Issues of time travel and destiney are explored as well as what makes one human in some.

Musical: Mamma Mia 5/5 Stars

Abba was the big hit thing during the eighties. With catch hit after catchy hit their legacy inspired the creation of a Broadway musical that finally crossed into the big screen. Mamma Mia tells the story of Sophie. Born and raised in a Greek Island she longs to know who her father is, for her mother raised her alone and never told her who he was. On the eve of getting married, Sophie invites all of her potential fathers to come to the wedding. Though it is unclear who the real father is, in the end all ends well and Dona, Sophie’s mother, is reunited with her true love. This story is beautifully and funnily played to the sound of Abba’s most iconic songs.

Sci-Fi/Horror: Alien

When this movie was first launched no one could guess the big success it would become. It tells the story a crew spaceship that sets to investigate a strange transmission. They land on planet with a foreign spaceship. During the investigation they find a strange creature that seems to have been killed from the inside. They also find numerous and one of them hatched the creature that comes of it latched onto one of the crew members’ face. When they finally depart from the planet they discovered the creature used the body of the attacked crew member to incubate another creature which emerges and is let loose on the spaceship, killing almost everyone except one last woman who manages to destroy it and escape.

Comedy: The Ugly Truth

Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler paired up in this witty and hilarious movie where a TV show producer, whose own show is threatened to be cancelled due to poor ratings, is forced to pair up with a chauvinism man whose ideas go totally against what she believes about lot and relationships. The rest of the movie shows how Butler’s character manages to change Heigl’s character point of view and the two eventually fall in love with each other.

Animation: Brave

This beautiful tale tells the story of Merida, a willful and stubborn princess who in her schemes to escape marriage ask the help of a witch. However, things don’t turn as she expected and her mother becomes a wild bear. She then needs to fight to regain the lost bond with her mother before it’s too late and her mother becomes a bear for all eternity while all the way protecting her mother-bear from being killed by her father. With the help of her three wee brothers, guts and bold demeanor, Merida manages to mend the bond and also escape marriage breaking with tradition.

Horror: Saw

When it seemed the horror movies scene was pretty much uneventful and more than less frightening, Saw came along. It drew people again to horror movies and allowed for a significant other numbers of films to be mad. Though it has spanned 5 sequels, the premises of the movies are pretty much the same. A group of people is put together in a place and if they want to survive they must complete the most gory and self-mutilating tasks there are. All people were chosen by a reason and their challenge is related to why they were chosen, so they learn about themselves and how bad they behaved in the past. I shall not go into details about the challenges but they’re definitely PG-18 rated.

Comedy - Hot Tub Time Machine

Do you ever want to watch one of those movies that doesn't let you think?  You can simply enjoy it without putting too much thought into it.  Well Hot Tub Time Machine is just that--it's silly fun that you'll find amusing throughout the whole time and with a sequel on the horizon you should catch up.  This movie is like Hangover but involves four friends accidentally travel back to their past selfs at the ski lodge they used to constantly visit in the 80s.  The humor is raunchy with a mixture of John Cuscack's special dry touch.  If you have time to spare, I recommend you pick up this film.

Romance - Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Hunger Games a romance?  In essence, while the movie is not a romance, Hunger Games is a product of the swift YA movement which was in need of a need love triangle after Harry Potter and Twilight (and no this does not mean I support Twilight--I still hate it but I can't deny its effect on society).  Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a vast improvement from the first movie--it stuck more to the book.  But it also had the benefit of not having to explain every single little detail it needed to explain during the first movie.  This installment is more gender friendly, meaning men and women can enjoy the film and appreciate it for what it actually is.  I always felt the movies would ultimately be better than the books because first person narratives are limited and don't always allow the reader to explore certain emotions and angles that third person narratives allow.  I am definitely look forward to the next movie.

Sci-Fi - Superman (2013)

DC has tried endlessly to jump start a decent comic book series for so long in the hopes that they can get the Justice League up and running.  With Marvel's Avengers running up so far ahead, you had to be curious if Henry Cavil's portrayal of the famed Superman would pull it off.  While I have no doubt of Cavil's skill (especially after watching the film), I do question the director's, writer's, and special effect's choices before, during and after filming.  The last battle was confusing and even nauseating to watch.  The script was bland at best but the actors were able to make something more of what they had--even though it wasn't much to begin with.  Do I think DC has a chance to rival Marvel?  Not yet, but with a new Superman and Batman film in the near future perhaps they'll correct their mistakes and have a chance.

Musical - Phantom of the Opera

Did anyone think Gerard Butler would be able to pull off the Phantom?  I didn't of course and at that time, he had only been exposed to audiences a few times.  In my opinion, Gerard Butler is the perfect Phantom and definitely has you rooting for the Phantom to win Christine's heart by the end.  All three main actors vocals were superb.  You didn't feel like you were watching a never-ending movie, the pace was ideal as it took the best from the stage and placed it on a large screen.

Animation - Tangled

Disney's Tangled was an enjoyable watch even though it took me a few watches before I fully appreciated this particular movie.  The voice actors did a fantastic job capturing the emotions and personalities of the characters they were portraying.  The music was reminiscent of Disney's Golden Age when Disney released the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast.  I would recommend this film to anyone who loves Disney--it is definitely a family movie and appropriately captures the adults attentions.

Sci fi: divergent

People have called this movie the next hunger games. I don't see why because they have nothing to do with each other. Divergent is based off of the trilogy by Veronica Roth. The three books in the trilogy are divergent, insurgent, and allegiant. They are all reportedly going to be made into movies within the next 5 years.
Divergent is about a faction filled society. If you are asking yourself "what is a faction" here is the answer: a faction is like a clique, but you are unable to change out of it. You are not supposed to see your family after the choosing ceremony, unless you stay in that faction. The choosing ceremony is where you choose your faction, based on the results of the test. The two main characters, tris and Tobias, are what the people call Divergent, which means the test did not work on them. The test is a test of fear to see where you are placed. They say in the movie " faction before blood" which is a stupid saying in my opinion. If you get placed in one faction by the test, you do not have to choose that faction on choosing day. It is just where the test thinks you will fit in the best.
The factions are abnegation, amity, candor, dauntless, and erudite. I think this movie is awesome. I saw it 6 times.

Romance: the prince and me

There are four movies in this series so far. They are all very entertaining, but also very romantic. The story tells of a girl, Paige Morgan, who falls in love with Eddie/Prince Edvard. Paige does not know Eddie is a prince at first, but once she figures it out, there is a lot of insecurities and other stuff, but you will have to watch the movie to find out. I would most definitely recommend these movies, even if you are not a big romance movie person, it also has humor and other things that you might like.

Comedy: ferris bueller's day off

This movie cracks me up. It has a few cuss words though, so anyone under 14, I would recommend asking a parent. It is about a boy named ferris bueller who tricks his parents into believing he is sick, so that he can get off school.

Thriller: now you see me

This movie is about four magicians trying to pull off the ultimate magic trick. It is an excellent movie with an ending that you never saw coming.

Horror: Frankenstein

I do not watch a lot of horror movies, as I do not particularly like them, but this movie was really good. It is about a scientist who is trying to create life and ends up creating Frankenstein the monster

Romance: Moulin Rouge
This film is my favourite romance film. It has all that a romantic film needs in it. Passion, excitement, jealousy, betrayal and then death. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have amazing on screen chemistry and so make the love between the two main characters, Christian and Satine, very believable. So much so that I cannot believe there was not a little off screen romance between the two. The rest of the characters are acted wonderfully and really meld together well to make the watcher think that this film is actually a retelling of a true story. To top it off it is told as a story by Christian looking back at it maybe many years later. This adds, I think, another dimension to it and makes it all the more interesting. I give it *****.

Comedy: White Chicks
I can be completely honest and say that this film had me in stitches when I first watched it. It quite brazenly challenges what is seen as the stereotypical white air head blonde girls. Full of adult humour, fantastic comedic dialogue and physical comedy, it is well acted and has an abundance of good characters. Although some of the humour get quite dirty, and is sometimes a tad unnecessary. For that reason I give it ***.

Sci-Fi: Star Trek
There are many people who think the new Star Trek films are apparently a travesty, I am not of that opinion. I think that the cast to reinvent the famed crew of the USS Enterprise was well chosen and act their own roles particularly well. Especially the very hard role of Spock. Zachary Quinto has to act as a character void of human emotions, which is difficult for even seasoned actors. But he is able to pull it off and bring the character in to his own. There is good use of CGI that looks both realistic and believable. You also get a good look in to the backgrounds of some characters, which is an interesting take on getting to know the characters as they are presented for the rest of the film. The story, although being done again and again by many films of the same nature, is great and easy to follow. I give it **** ½.

Animation: Brave
The ancient old story of someone trying to change their current situation, in hopes of a better future for themselves. Voiced by many well known actors, including Julie Walters, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson, they magical story pulls you in from the start. There is a medieval political angle to the story too, as the young Scottish Princess Merida fights to lead a life of her own, despite the many expectations placed on her. Animated well using a computer generated format, it gives it a more realistic look than drawn animations, but it still retains that animated sheen that so entices children and adults alike to such films. I give it *****.

Period drama: The Young Victoria
Can also be put in the category of real life, this film is one of the best period drama films I have seen in a long time. A time in Queen Victoria's life which is not often focused upon, it is full of what is expected of the genre it is in, Drama! It also focuses on a unique aspect of Victoria's life that not many historic monarchs had the privilege of experiencing, Love. She fell in love with her intended betrothed and the excitement that it creates does give the story that little touch of familiarity with the common man, as most historical Kings and Queens thought themselves above commoners. Not easy for the main actors Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend to capture real life people, but brilliantly and ably acted by both. I give it **** ½.

Musical: The Wizard of Oz
This is my second all-time favorite movie. My favorite being Harry Potter, of course. This movie is about a girl named Dorothy, who gets trapped in a tornado that transports her to the magical land of Oz. She has many adventures along the way, as well as getting to meet some new friends. Dorothy begins by meeting the Scarecrow, then The Tin Man, and finally, The Cowardly Lion. She is following the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard of Oz, who can get her back home, to Kansas. This movie is very interesting, with many songs along the way.
Sci-Fi: I Am Number Four
This movie is based off a book in the Lorien Legacies Series. The planet, Lorien, was attacked by aliens called Magorians. The Magorians wanted the planet Lorien for themselves, because it was a very advanced planet, even more so than Earth. There are these “People” from Lorien that escaped and went to Earth. There were not many of them, but they had to be gotten rid of in number order. They knew who was already gone because they would get these scars on their legs. One for each person the Magorians had gotten rid of. I will not tell you the end of the movie because I want you to watch it, but I will tell you that it is very sad and action-packed.
True Life: Dolphin Tale
This movie is about a Dolphin that loses its tail. It also involves trying to figure out how to help the dolphin, whose name is Winter, swim without damaging her spine. The way they do this is by creating a prosthetic tail for the dolphin. I don’t want to spoil anything for anybody, but the movie takes place at Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. This dolphin is so inspiring for everyone, not just me.
Animation: Minions
This movie is super cute, even for adults. It is a prequel to Despicable Me 1 and 2. It tells the story of who the minions are and how they came to be. I would recommend this to anyone who likes animation movies, whether they be adult or teenager or child, because I went to see it as an adult and still found it adorable, just like my teenage friends and some kids we were babysitting.
Mystery: Nancy Drew
This movie is really good. I never knew who the criminal was until Nancy figured it out. I don’t know about you, but that makes a really great mystery for me. Every time I re-watch the movie, I notice something different about the movie, which I never noticed before. Even if it is a very small thing, it is interesting to me.
